Former Ambassador to Washington Named Foreign Minister

Nabil Fahmy, a career diplomat who served as Egyptian ambassador to the United States from 1999 to 2008, has agreed to serve as foreign minister in the interim government being put in place by Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi.

The announcement by the presidency on Sunday followed reports that the current foreign minister, Mohamed Kamel Amr, decided not to continue in the post, saying new leadership is needed. During demonstrations against President Mohamed Mursi that led to his ouster, Amr expressed solidarity with the demands of the protesters and tendered his resignation.

Since 2008, Fahmy has been ambassador-at-large at the Foreign Ministry and the founding dean of the School of Public Affairs at the American University in Cairo.

Also on Sunday, Mohamed ElBaradei was sworn in on Sunday as Egypt?s interim vice president for foreign relations, according to agency reports.

Mursi supporters to protest after overthrow, arrests

By Tom Perry and Alastair Macdonald

CAIRO (Reuters) - Islamist allies of Egypt's ousted president, Mohamed Mursi, called on people to protest on Friday to express outrage at his overthrow by the army and to reject a planned interim government backed by their liberal opponents.

Dozens of people were wounded in clashes in Mursi's home city on Thursday, raising fears of more of the violence in which several dozen have died in the past month. There were also militant attacks in the restive Sinai peninsula, next to Israel.

How the army deals with any trouble will help determine future support for Cairo from the United States and other international powers.

Concern that the generals have carried out a military coup against Egypt's first freely elected leader has left Washington reviewing the $1.5 billion in mostly military aid it annually gives Egypt.

U.S. law bars aid for countries where the military has toppled an elected government in a coup. The United States has so far avoided using that label.

The planned protests have the slogan "Friday of Rejection".

Outside the Rabaa Adaweya mosque in a Cairo suburb, where Mursi supporters have gathered over the last week, the army deployed extra armored vehicles several hundred meters from makeshift barricades.

Thousands of people milled around the area, while a group of about 50 men shouted pro-Mursi slogans.

"Down, down with military rule!" they chanted. "We call for jihad in the whole country."

In the skies above the teeming city, the air force staged fly-pasts, with jets leaving red, white and black smoke streams - representing the Egyptian flag - behind them in a show of force the military has employed frequently since Mursi's ouster.

A military source said: "We will continue to secure the places of protest with troops, and jets if necessary, to make sure the pro- and anti-Mursi demonstrators don't confront each other. We will let them demonstrate and go where they want."

Mursi's political opponents insist there was no coup.

Rather, the army heeded the "will of the people" in forcing the president out. Millions rallied on Sunday to protest over a collapsing economy and political deadlock, in which Mursi had failed to build a broad consensus after a year in office.

After a busy day of diplomacy by concerned Obama administration officials interrupting their Independence Day holiday in Washington, the Egyptian armed forces command issued a late-night statement guaranteeing rights to protest and free expression, and pledging not to pursue arbitrary measures against any political group.

The uncontroversial phrasing belied a busy 24 hours since the military chief suspended the constitution, detained Mursi and oversaw the swearing in of the chief justice of the constitutional court as Egypt's interim head of state.

In addition to Mursi, the country's first freely elected leader, several senior figures in his Muslim Brotherhood were held, security sources said. Prosecutors were investigating various charges, including incitement to violence and, in the case of Mursi himself, insulting the judiciary.

Television channels owned by or seen as sympathetic to the Brotherhood were abruptly taken off air. The state printer did not run off its party newspaper on Thursday or Friday.

"These media paint a different picture of the situation, which the army does not want people to see," said Islam Taqfiq from the media committee at the Brotherhood's political wing.

COUP OR NO COUP?

In Zagazig, the Nile Delta city where Mursi has a family home, 80 people were injured. Witnesses said the army moved in to seal the area after an attack on pro-Mursi protesters by men on motorcycles led to clashes with sticks, knives and bottles.

For a movement that has been banned and politically oppressed for most of its 85-year history, such developments have reinforced impressions among the Islamists that a "deep state", once loyal to fallen autocrat Hosni Mubarak and his army-backed predecessors, is still determined to crush it.

Washington, the armed forces' longtime sponsor, has voiced concern for human rights, but also for the stability of the biggest Arab nation. Egypt's peace with Israel and control of the Suez Canal give it a strategic importance beyond its 84 million people.

Washington, along with Middle Eastern allies from Israel to Saudi Arabia, are not lamenting the Brotherhood's stunning reversal. The organization has long represented many Arabs' hopes for a better society but was found gravely wanting during Mursi's year of missteps and rancorous division.

While avoiding the word "coup", the White House said some on Obama's national security team had contacted Egyptian officials "to convey the importance of a quick and responsible return of full authority to a democratically elected civilian government".

Egypt's caretaker Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr said that U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry had expressed concern during a telephone call on Thursday for human rights.

"He was worried about the status of human rights," Amr said. "Understandably. I assured him there is no retribution, no acts of vengeance, that nobody will be treated outside the law."

Amr, a career diplomat who tended his resignation to Mursi after Sunday's anti-government protests, said he had spent the day calling international counterparts and briefing ambassadors with the message that there had been no "military coup" in Egypt. The army had merely heeded the popular will.

"USURPERS"

Adli Mansour, the constitutional court chief justice sworn in as interim head of state on Thursday, has held out an olive branch to the Brotherhood, but a senior official in the Islamist movement said it would not work with "the usurper authorities".

Another of its politicians said Mursi's overthrow would push other groups, though not his own, to violent resistance.

The armed forces' statement contained a warning to those Islamists planning to demonstrate on Friday.

"Excessive use of this right without reason could carry some negative implications, including blocking roads, delaying public benefits and destroying institutions, posing a threat to social peace, the national interest and damaging the security and economy in our precious Egypt."

Washington has been urging Egyptian leaders to resolve their differences quickly so that unrest which has sapped tourist revenue and investment ends and the economy can recover.

The Brotherhood renounced violence decades ago. Even among its allies who were engaged in armed struggle against Mubarak in the 1990s and beyond, there seems little appetite to resume it.

But Egypt does have troubles with militancy, not least in the largely empty Sinai peninsula, where radical Islamists with links to al Qaeda have become more active since Mubarak fell.

SINAI ATTACKS

Early on Friday, security sources said Islamist gunmen opened fire on El-Arish airport, close to the border with the Gaza Strip and Israel and at three military checkpoints.

A police station in Rafah on the Gaza border was hit by rockets, wounding several soldiers. Security forces closed the border crossing. State media said it would reopen on Saturday.

It was not clear whether the coordinated attack on several army positions was in response Mursi's overthrow.

Mursi's dramatic exit was greeted with delight by millions of jubilant people on the streets of Cairo and other cities on Wednesday evening, but there was simmering resentment among Egyptians who opposed the military intervention.

Following the swearing in of Mansour as interim head of state, the next step in the army's road map back to democracy is the formation of an interim government in the next few days. One state newspaper said it should be ready on Sunday.

After that, a panel is to revise the constitution in order to hold parliamentary and presidential elections.

Amr Moussa, a former foreign minister, head of the Arab League and now liberal party leader, told Reuters he expected the full transition to elected institutions to take no more than 12 months and possibly just six. "This is doable," he said.

ASUS Transformer Book review: meet ASUS' first detachable Ultrabook

For a while, it looked like ASUS' Transformer Book would turn out to be vaporware: after debuting to much fanfare a year ago, it encountered numerous delays, and even missed the crucial holiday shopping season. Now it's finally here, priced at $1,499 with a Core i7 processor, a 13.3-inch (1080p) screen and a detachable keyboard dock housing both a spare battery and a 500GB hard drive. The problem is the timing: Intel is about to launch its new Haswell chips, and here's the Transformer Book, arriving on the scene with a lofty price and a year-old CPU.

It'd be easy enough to tell you just wait for a refresh, which is how we've been ending all of our PC reviews in the weeks leading up to this year's Computex. But it's still worth investigating whether the Transformer Book (aka the TX300) is a compelling idea. Though we've seen many tablet hybrids (the Surface Pro, etc.), they've mostly had smaller 11-inch screens. So what happens when you take that form factor and stretch it to accommodate a bigger screen -- and a more spacious keyboard? And how does it compare to all those convertible options out there, like the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 or the Dell XPS 12? Let's have a look.

Cairo airport baggage handlers end strike

CAIRO (AP) ? Cairo airport officials say baggage handlers have resumed work after a strike that left passengers on 20 international flights from Europe and Arab countries waiting several hours for luggage.

Baggage handlers went on strike Saturday afternoon to demand stronger safety measures after a colleague died when a conveyer belt used to unload luggage fell on his head.

His EgyptAir co-workers say it took more than an hour for the ambulance to arrive at the scene from the airport's onsite hospital. Hospital officials deny this, and say the ambulance arrived within 10 minutes.

EgyptAir official Alaa el-Shahawy, who is responsible for ground logistics at Cairo airport, submitted his resignation Sunday. Airport officials say he will remain in the job until an investigation is complete.

Officials spoke anonymously in line with regulations.

US Airways plane makes unusual belly landing at Newark airport

By David Jones

NEWARK, New Jersey (Reuters) - A US Airways flight made an emergency landing on its belly at Newark Liberty International Airport early on Saturday after the plane's landing gear failed to deploy, but no one was injured, airline and government officials said.

Piedmont Airlines flight 4560, operating for US Airways from Philadelphia with 34 passengers and three crew members, landed safely at 1 a.m., and passengers were evacuated on the tarmac and transported to the terminal, a Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman said in an email.

Belly landings are unusual and dangerous because of the threat of fire from the plane fuselage skidding on a hard surface, according to aviation experts.

The airport was closed for more than an hour, and the runway was closed for more than eight hours following the incident, officials said.

The National Transportation Safety Board said in a Twitter post that it was investigating. A US Airways spokesman said the plane is a Dash 8-100 with a capacity of 37 passengers. The plane was made by De Havilland of Canada, which is owned by Bombardier Inc.

The plane left Philadelphia late on Friday night and the pilot made an emergency declaration after the left main landing gear failed to deploy, according to airline and FAA officials. The pilot circled the airport and then decided to land with no gear deployed.

The incident comes nearly three weeks after a Scandinavian Airlines plane with 252 people on board clipped the wing of an ExpressJet, operated by Skywest Inc., with 31 passengers as they were preparing to take off from the same airport. There were no injuries.

Google's AdWords Express Gets a Makeover - Marketing Pilgrim

Google-Adwords-Express-Logo1Google?s AdWords Express which is designed to help small businesses take advantage of paid search by literally doing the heavy lifting for them through placement of ads on behalf of the advertiser, got a facelift of sorts.

Google is on a push to make things more beautiful and efficient. I get it in theory but the whole beautiful part sounds so forced although it is a company mantra these days.

The Inside AdWords blog tells us

Today, when you log into AdWords Express, you?ll notice a brand new look. We?ve listened to your feedback and worked with a lot of small businesses to streamline the AdWords Express experience. It?s part of our ongoing efforts to make Google products more beautiful and efficient.

The first change comes in the dashboard where Google tells us:

Small business owners have told us that they?re busy and that they don?t want to spend time looking for the information they need. We redesigned the dashboard to show you at a glance how many views, clicks and calls your ad has generated. There?s a simple pie chart for tracking your monthly spending, and you can also compare results over time with the new performance graph.

Google couldn?t figure that out on their own? Most SMB?s are pressed for time so if you have to root around for information in a confusing interface that was engineered by engineers for engineers then of course they might not be thrilled. Oh well. The new dashboard looks like this.

AdWords Express New Dashboard 5.17.13

Another improvement is the paring down the sign up process to just three steps (which is more of a benefit to Google and, once again, why do they need to ?discover? the idea that the less steps the better for non-engineer types?).

Last but not least is real-time ad previews. They look like this.

Real Time Ad Previews AdWords Expresss 5.13

OK, so now Google AdWords Express is more beautiful and efficient. Do you feel better?

Miners union threatens strike at South Africa's Amplats

By Helen Nyambura-Mwaura and Sherilee Lakmidas

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Miners at South Africa's Anglo American Platinum reported for work late Thursday, and a labor leader said the workers will strike on Friday in an escalation of unrest that sent the company's shares lower and the rand to a four-year low.

The threatened action is to protest Amplats' plans to cut as many as 6,000 jobs in a bid to return to profit, down from the 14,000 it initially proposed, and comes just as a two-day wildcat strike ends at platinum producer Longman.

"Workers are going underground; everything is normal," Amplats spokeswoman Mpumi Sithole told Reuters late on Thursday.

A branch leader with the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) said earlier that miners would not work the overnight shift on Thursday, but another said later in the day that the action would commence on Friday.

"We decided that it would be tomorrow. It's not AMCU that have called the strike, it's the workers," said Evans Ramokga, an Amplats' labor leader also linked to AMCU.

Months of violent labor unrest in the mining sector last year, including the police killing of 34 strikers at Lonmin's Marikana mine, slowed the growth of South Africa's biggest economy and triggered credit rating downgrades.

On Thursday the prospect of another round of trouble sent the rand to four-year lows. Amplats shares fell more than 4 percent by the close and reached an eight-year low.

AMCU's leadership often distances itself from illegal strike action, but the leadership showed that it was in control this week, when leaders addressed the striking Lonmin miners and told them to return to the shafts, which the miners promptly did.

AMCU has succeeded in poaching tens of thousands of members from the once dominant National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).

More than 50 people have been killed in more than 12 months of unrest stemming from a turf war between the two unions. The rivalry was stoked over the weekend when an AMCU organizer was shot dead in a tavern.

The current action comes shortly before a round of wage talks being billed as the toughest since the end of apartheid in 1994, as shrinking company margins and falling commodity prices combine with rising worker militancy.

Sithole said Amplats had received no notification of an intent to strike. The company fell to a loss last year in part because of the strikes, which shut its mines near Rustenburg for months.

DEADLY STRIFE

NUM, an ally of the ruling African National Congress (ANC), had enjoyed a near monopoly in the mining sector but started to lose members as a belief took hold that its leaders had become too close to management.

NUM says its rival AMCU has risen to prominence through violence and promises of unrealistic wage hikes at a time of razor-thin margins in the platinum sector in South Africa, home to 80 percent of known reserves of the metal.

NUM also points to its own success in wringing above-inflation wage hikes out of mining companies over the past decade.

The unrest is also rooted partly in glaring income disparities within the mining industry and the wider society.

Patience is wearing thin two decades after the end of white rule as much of the black mine labor force, which is semi-literate and drawn from poor rural areas, still makes only a few hundred dollars a month even after years of big wage rises.

And with an election looming in a year, the ANC is worried about the prospect of big job losses and forced Amplats to scale back its initial plan to shed 14,000 positions.

The cabinet is "extremely, extremely concerned" about the latest unrest, Environment Minister Edna Molewa told reporters at a post-cabinet news conference on Thursday.

JK Shin: Galaxy S4 to top 10 million sold next week

JK Shin

Galaxy ?S4 could pass the 10 million mark twice as quickly as the S3

JK Shin has told the Korean press that he expects the Samsung Galaxy S4 to pass 10 million units sold next week. Speaking with the Korea Times, the Samsung co-CEO said he was "confident" the milestone would be met, adding "it is selling much faster than the previous model S3."

The Galaxy S4 benefits from having launched across three major U.S. carriers at the same time as the global launch. By contrast, the U.S. release of the S3 took place several months behind the initial European launch. That device passed the 10 million mark in late July 2012, having begun shipping a little under two months earlier. If the S4 hits 10 million next week, it'd mean S4s are being shifted twice as fast as last year's S3. It'd also make it Samsung's fastest-selling smartphone, the Korea Times notes.

The last set of shipment numbers reported in the Korean press suggested 6 million GS4s had shipped as of May 10. Today's Korea Times article refers to units sold, not units shipped, so it's possible the distinction may have been lost in translation. Either way, that's a lot of Galaxy S4s.

Adding the blueprint into actions is the most important step because the measures get the job done you wished when you started this procedure. For many business owners, this really is easy you are currently action-oriented! Here is a number of business advice, and a few tips, that will help you placed (whilst) your current accounting strategic business plan for doing things:

Keep your prepare with you.
Put it to use as being a decision-making instrument.
Revise the idea together with brand new views.
Share the idea with individuals you rely on and also whose ideas an individual worth.
Calculate how you?re progressing at least every three months.
Create a price range to fit the blueprint.

A record-setting genome for a towering giant
Deciphering the genome of the loblolly pine is a tall order, as is perhaps fitting for a tree that can grow to be 30 meters in height.

Researchers sequenced the conifer?s (Pinus taeda) approximately 24 billion bases of DNA, Steven Salzberg of Johns Hopkins University reported May 10. That surpasses the previous record holder, wheat, by more than 7 billion bases. The DNA is distributed over 12 chromosomes, each about two-thirds the size of the entire human genome.

A preliminary analysis suggests the trees may have up to 64,000 protein-coding genes, although Salzberg says the number is probably smaller. Humans have just over 22,000 protein-coding genes.

Next, the researchers will tackle the sugar pine genome. That one is even bigger, with more than 35 billion DNA bases.

Strong swimming sperm?s secret
A gene variant can make sperm strong and speedy, a study of wild mice suggests.

Researchers compared two species of wild mice -- one promiscuous, one monogamous -- to learn how genetic factors produce physical characteristics that may give one species an evolutionary edge.

By pitting sperm from the two species against each other in a race to the top of a test tube, Hopi Hoekstra, a Harvard University evolutionary geneticist, and her group found that the fastest sperm are ones that have tails with a longer midsection. Hoekstra reported May 9 that the team traced the genetic source of that structural difference to a variant in the PRKAR1A gene. In people, male infertility can accompany mutations in that gene.

The gene?s activity is higher in hybrid males carrying at least one copy of the promiscuous species? version than in males with two copies the monogamous version. And males with the promiscuous gene produce sperm with longer midsections and appear to have a mating advantage even when no other males are around. Of the males that sired pups when left alone with a female for a week, 45 percent carried two copies of the promiscuous species? version of the gene, while only 25 percent had two copies of the monogamous species? version.

In and out of Africa
Migration out of Africa wasn?t a one-way journey, a new study suggests. In about 1,000 BC, a large group of people made the reverse trek from the Middle East into eastern Africa, evolutionary geneticist Joseph Pickrell of Harvard Medical School reported May 11.

Those migrants mixed with east Africans, and their descendants carried their genetic heritage into southern Africa.

Pickrell and his colleagues discovered the back-to-Africa migration while investigating a genetic connection between Italians and some southern Africans. Shared genetic variants between southern Europeans and Africans could mean that factions of the original Middle Eastern population migrated both into Africa and into Europe.

How one group got past IRS scrutiny

MediaTrackers.org

In May 2011, Drew Ryun, a conservative activist and former Republican National Committee staffer, began filling out the Internal Revenue Service application to achieve non-profit status for a new conservative watchdog group.

He submitted the paperwork to the IRS in July 2011 for a news site called Media Trackers, which calls itself a "non-partisan investigative watchdog dedicated to promoting accountability in the media and government." Although the site has investigated Republicans like Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Florida Gov. Rick Scott, the site's organizers are unapologetically conservative.

"One thing we don't hide is: 'Yeah, we're conservative?free-market, free-enterprise, full-spectrum conservative,'" Ryun told Mother Jones magazine last year.

Eight months passed without word from the agency about the group's application, Ryun said. In February 2012, Ryun's attorney contacted the IRS to ask if it needed more information to secure its non-profit status as a 501(c)3 organization. According to Ryun, the IRS told him that the application was being processed by the agency's office in Cincinnati, Ohio?the same one currently facing scrutiny for targeting conservative groups?and to check back in two months.

As directed, Ryun followed up with the IRS in April 2012, and was told that Media Trackers' application was still under review.

When September 2012 arrived with still no word from the IRS, Ryun determined that Media Trackers would likely never obtain standalone non-profit status, and he tried a new approach: Starting over. He applied for permanent non-profit status for a separate group called Greenhouse Solutions, a pre-existing organization that was reaching the end of its determination period.

The IRS approved Greenhouse Solutions' request for non-profit status in three weeks.

When news broke last week that the IRS had applied heavier scrutiny to conservative groups seeking non-profit status from 2010-2012, Ryun said he became convinced that his second application was approved quickly because he applied under the Greenhouse Solutions title, which he called a "liberal-sounding name."

"Within three weeks, Greenhouse received permanent non-profit status from the IRS, and the IRS approval was transmitted to us from its Cincinnati office. We then rolled the Media Trackers project into Greenhouse and began work on a number of new projects," Ryun told Yahoo News in an interview. "Do I think we benefited from what many think is a liberal-sounding name? Absolutely."

In December 2012, Ryun simply made Media Trackers a project of Greenhouse Solutions and withdrew the Media Trackers application.

The IRS website explains why some requests for tax-exempt status take longer than others to process.

"Sometimes, representatives of exempt organizations and practitioners question why certain applications for tax exemption are processed faster than others. Not all applications are the same," the site reads. "While many are complete when received and involve straight-forward scenarios, others may be incomplete or involve complex issues that require further development."

The IRS is currently under fire from both Democrats and Republicans, and Attorney General Eric Holder on Tuesday announced that he had directed the FBI to launch a criminal probe into the IRS. The same day, the Treasury inspector general for tax administration submitted a review of the IRS' practices, which found that the agency had used "inappropriate criteria" to determine which groups were eligible for non-profit status. Current and former IRS officials are expected to testify about the issue before House committees starting Friday.

'Out of Time' Fossil Reveals Ancient Ocean Diversity

A fossil that once lined a mule track in Iraq has revealed the surprising survival of a group of ichthyosaurs, marine reptiles that swam the seas more than 66 million years ago.

Researchers had previously believed that ichthyosaurs declined throughout the Jurassic Period, which lasted from 199 million to 145 million years ago, with the only survivors rapidly evolving to keep ahead of repeated extinction events. The new fossil, however, dates from the Cretaceous Period, which lasted from 145 million to 66 million years ago. It looks remarkably like its Jurassic brethren, revealing a surprising evolutionary statis.

The fossil "represents an animal that seems 'out of time' for its age," study researcher Valentin Fischer of the University of Li?ge in Belgium said in a statement. [Ichthyosaur Images: Photos of a Sea Monster]

Ichthyosaur evolution

Ichythyosaurs were dolphin-shaped swimming reptiles that gave birth to live young. They lived in the oceans at the same time dinosaurs were tromping around on land. Previously, researchers thought only one group of ichthyosaurs, called ophthalmosaurids, made it out of the Jurassic into the Cretaceous. The newly named fossil, dubbed Malawania anachronus, is a Cretaceous survivor that does not belong to the ophthalmosaurids, however. That means a "ghost lineage" of ichthyosaurs survived alongside the ophthalmosaurids, changing very little over millions of years.

The fossil in question was first found in the 1950s by British petroleum geologists, who noticed the slab being used as a stepping stone on a mule track in Iraq. The geologists rescued the fossil and took it to the United Kingdom, where it stayed unstudied until the 1970s. Because researchers didn't know where in the rock record the fossil had come from, they struggled to determine its age. (Layers of earth build up over time, meaning, in a general sense, the oldest layers will be on the bottom and the more recent layers more toward the surface.)

Dating the fossil

Modern technology made dating the mysterious fossil possible. Jeff Liston of National Museums Scotland was able to sample the stone slab and found pollen, spores and other microfossils that helped pinpoint the place and time of fossilization. The result, reported Tuesday (May 14) in the journal Biology Letters: The fossil out of time came from the Early Cretaceous.

The resulting ichthyosaur family tree suggests these marine reptiles stayed diverse into the Cretaceous, only to go mysteriously extinct 95 million years ago.

"This 'living fossil' of its time demonstrates the existence of a lineage that we had never even imagined," Fischer said in a statement. "Maybe the existence of such Jurassic-style ichthyosaurs in the Cretaceous has been missed, because they always lived in the Middle East, a region that has previously yielded only a single, very fragmentary ichthyosaur fossil."

Global shares fight back, oil slides as dollar momentum returns

By Marc Jones

LONDON (Reuters) - Signs the dollar was preparing for another move higher held down oil and gold prices on Tuesday and helped shares shake off worries over weaker-than-forecast German sentiment data.

Wall Street looked set to open up by the smallest of margins with investors still looking for clear directional catalysts after last week's repeated record highs.

After a surprising rise in U.S. retail sales boosted optimism about the recovery in the world's top economy on Monday, Germany's ZEW monthly sentiment survey underscored the uncertainty that continues to weigh on Europe.

The monthly poll of economic sentiment rose to 36.4 points from 36.3 in April, undershooting the consensus forecast in a Reuters poll of 30 economists of 38.3, with the institute blaming the miss on the euro zone's woes.

Europe's top shares on the FTSEurofirst 300 <.fteu3> had fallen after the data but gradually struggled back to positive territory by 1245 GMT as investors took the opportunity to get back into the market.

Monday's strong U.S. retail sales had prompted Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan to upgrade their view on second-quarter U.S. growth. More data will be released this week, including industrial production, housing starts and consumer sentiment.

Dan Morris, a macro strategist at JP Morgan, said the recent rise in the dollar was also a sign investors were becoming increasingly confident about U.S. growth.

"It is an indicator that the United States is doing better so that should generally be a positive signal for equities ... the only thing that has really changed is the perception now of (better) U.S. economic growth," he said.

DOLLAR HIGH

The dollar had been quiet for most of the day, pushing the focus onto the euro which had a mixed day, and the Australian dollar after its finance minister suggested interest rates could be cut again.

Disappointment in the euro over the ZEW figures was initially offset when Spain announced plans for a 7 billion euro 10-year bond sale, seen as a sign of confidence, but the rebound fizzled to leave it at $1.2970, well below $1.30 where it started the day.

Spain auctioned just over 4 billion euros of treasury bills after a well-received bond auction last week and an 8 billion euro debt sale by Italy on Monday.

Despite the lift, the benchmark German Bund stayed well inside its tight recent range, while yields on Italian and Spanish bonds edged up again leaving them at their highest in two weeks.

The initial lull in the dollar had allowed gold to find a firmer footing after three days of falls and helped oil to steady. But as the greenback began to gather momentum again, selling resumed.

In contrast to the still weak euro zone, economists are beginning to shake off fears of a U.S. spring slowdown and the pick up has stirred market talk that the Federal Reserve could scale back its aggressive bond-buying program.

Brent crude oil slipped back towards $102 per barrel as traders were caught between hopes of a revival in global economic growth and evidence of ample supply stocks from the West's energy watchdog, the International Energy Agency.

"Following several years of stronger-than-expected North American supply growth, the shockwaves of rising U.S. shale gas and light tight oil and Canadian oil sands production are reaching virtually all recesses of the global oil market," the IEA said.

Mad Men, Season 6

It?s been noted before that Pete Campbell badly wants to be Don Draper, but every time Pete pulls a move from the Draper playbook it goes horribly awry. When Pete casually beds a secretary, she gets pregnant and spurns him. When he frequents a whorehouse, he bumps into his father-in-law. When he leases a sex pad, it turns into a hospice for his doddering mother.

Pete and Don?s storylines paralleled again this week. Both men abandoned the SCDP office to deal with women locked away in rooms. While Don acted out his domination fantasies with Sylvia, Pete subdued his mom with a steady stream of insults and gin. In the end, even though Pete was dealing with a parent, it was Don who seemed more childlike. There was something almost motherly in the tender way Sylvia patted Don?s cheek as she told him his little boy?s game -- put on this sexy red dress, now take it off, and whatever you do you must think only of me -- was finally over.

Joan mentioned the tale of Rip van Winkle as she suffered in that hospital waiting room??You like that story? I know it. I could tell it to you,? said the solicitous Bob Benson?and again my thoughts drifted to Don, a man falling swiftly out of step with the times. As you note, Hanna, Don still gets drunk at the office, still shaves off the sideburns every other man grows out, and still hearkens back to the earnest simplicity of the Depression when Ted speaks the language of dippy, high-concept sitcoms. I think Peggy spoke for Don?s colleagues, for most of Mad Men?s audience, and for many of our commenters when she urged Don, ?Move forward.? Don is asleep in a prior era, due to wake up and realize the world has moved on without him.

Or perhaps he?s awoken already, and his fear and disorientation spurred these power grabs? It?s when Don?s lost control that he becomes controlling. Megan isn?t reliant on him anymore, she?s a TV star, so his ears perk up when Sylvia purrs, ?I need you and nothing else will do.? What happens next seems slightly out of nowhere: an elaborate game of Simon Says that soon has Sylvia naked and subservient. My first interpretation was that this behavior stemmed from Don?s neediness?a pathetic bid to reclaim lost authority. But some of our commenters suggest an intriguing alternative take.

The episode?s title is ?Man With a Plan.? What was Don?s plan? Did he begin plotting when he overheard that fight between Sylvia and Arnold? Did he anticipate trouble with Sylvia lounging alone downstairs in his building, nothing better to do than toy with Don?s marriage? Maybe, just maybe, Don tortured Sylvia because he knew it would send her back into Arnold?s arms and safely out of town. Maybe Don was acting. I mean, consider: When he ordered Sylvia to crawl on all fours, he didn?t even manage to own the line as convincingly as Mickey Rourke did in 9 ? Weeks. (And Kim Basinger complied. Linda Cardellini didn?t.)

Speaking of ?80s flicks, I chuckled at the Maverick vs. Ice Man duel going down between Don and Ted Chaough. Like Sylvia, Ted at first goes woozy for Don?s dominatrix routine, but then ignores it. I?ve come to love laid-back but together Ted, who is eager to ?rap? about ?groovy? stuff yet still starts meetings on time. We?d always thought Don was the one with the high EQ?able to suss out the subconscious desires of consumers, clients, and gorgeous women everywhere. But it?s Ted who?s got Don sized up. ?He seems more interested in me than in the work,? Ted astutely comments to the bedridden Frank Gleason. It?s not even clear that Don can spot the insecurities driving his own behavior. He has no perspective. Ted suggests as much: ?Sometimes when you?re flying, you think you?re right side up, but you?re upside down.?

Matthew Weiner has often confessed that he plans this show one season at a time, with no idea what lies beyond. The first season of Mad Men was tightly focused: It was about a man whose life is a lie, a man who understands the lies we all tell ourselves, a man whose gift for spinning lies makes him a genius in the ad game. That theme was fairly well resolved, or at least explored to its outer reaches. Yet the show continues. And I remain fascinated by the evolution of Don in Season 6.

He is often pitiful in ways we?ve never seen before?eavesdropping on the wrong side of closed doors, sweating at the very moment he claims he is calm, tuning out his wife like they?re a zipless old couple. He has now lost much of the respect of Peggy and Joan, the rare co-workers who could always glimpse the decent man beneath the roguish exterior. He?s oblivious in meetings, dumbly eating toast. He is two bare feet away from becoming a slightly more with-it Bert Cooper.

Developments I am looking forward to in the second half of this season:

1) Any sort of shenanigans involving John Slattery and Harry Hamlin. Bring on the oily banter! I wanna party with these dudes.

2) Anything at all involving Sally Draper. Where?d you go, Sally? We are all antsy to reacquaint ourselves with your charming m?lange of vulnerability and sass. Shouldn?t you be smoking weed with Glenn by now?

3) The unraveling of the Bob Benson mystery. Did you notice Ted accepted Bob?s extra coffee?the one Don always refuses? Might be an omen! What is the deal with this dude? Is Bob an FBI mole sent to spy on Madison Avenue?s seditious anti-war activity? Has Mad Men warped my view of human behavior so severely that I cannot imagine a man with no guile? Is Bob a refugee from another, gentler show?like maybe I Dream of Jeannie? Just a nice guy whose ?every good deed is not part of a plan,? as Joan?s mom insists?

Which reminds me: Who, ultimately, was our ?Man With a Plan?? Was it Bob, with his job-saving, Good Samaritan maneuver? Don, laying out his complicated regimen for Sylvia? Roger, who?d been anticipating a chance to re-boot Burt Peterson? Or was it Bobby Kennedy, or Richard Nixon, whose fates were dramatically altered by the end of the episode?

It?s over when I say it?s over,

Nokia reveal new Lumia smartphone in the UK ad, teases 'more than your eyes can see' video

We're still days away from Nokia's London media event, but the comapny's apparently got a real taste for teasers. A new 20-second promo clip aired today in the UK, and although it doesn't outline any outright specs or model numbers, we get a (very) up-close look at a dual-flash arrangement (unlike the xenon flash seen on Verizon's Lumia 928), a glossy white shell and some metal detailing. We're relieved that Nokia has something new to unveil in the UK next week, but we're now itching to hear exactly how this Windows Phone will differ from the now-public Lumia 928. We'll have all the details on Tuesday morning.

Update: The Verge has managed to upload a digital copy of the ad. See it for yourself right after the break.
