RPG Grinsia (for Android)

Like?Symphony of Eternity($2.99, 4 stars) and RPG Aeon Avenger ($3.99, 3.5 stars), RPG Grinsia ($7.99 on Google Play) is a traditional, top-down Japanese RPG for most Android phones and tablets with a fantasy setting, cute little cartoon characters, and turn-based combat. Unlike in some of its competition, Grinsia starts you out with a pre-formed party: a family of "treasure hunters" who quickly get drawn into a plan to protect some ancient artifacts from a predatory empire. Translation and character development are actually pretty good here, and you can answer simple yes/no questions in the dialog interface. There's even a bit of comedy.

Grinsia takes place in three scales: a zoomed-in town mode, a zoomed-out walkable world map, and a turn-based battle interface. Battles are more tedious than in the other Kemco games I've played, because fighting always seems to require one too many taps, there's a tedious little XP-acquisition sequence at the end of every battle, and there's very little user choice in terms of acquiring skills and abilities. In a game where you're constantly running into invisible random monster encounters, that's an issue.

Grinsia's other challenge is that it seems to be easy to get stuck; I had trouble about five hours in with a cave where the game's UI elements seemed to be blocking the way out, for instance, and I've seen other complaints online about different locations. There have been a few minor version updates since I played through, though, so those sticky points may have been cleared up by now.

Grinsia isn't a must-buy like Kemco's classic Symphony of Eternity. There just isn't as much fun character-building involved, and the battles don't go as smoothly. But, for eight dollars with no additional purchases necessary, it's a decent plot-driven RPG.

Joy Lawson: Equal Pay, Now

We'd all like to think, in 2012, that pay discrimination is a thing of the past. But the pay gap still exists, and it's big: women earn an average of 77 cents on a man's dollar, and African-American and Latina women are paid even less than white women. Young or old, the pay gap continues to hurt women and their families throughout their lives: over the course of their careers, women miss out on an average of $430,000 that we've earned but don't receive.

It's not just about being able to more easily afford life's necessities -- the amount we lose annually to pay discrimination could cover a year's worth of rent, feed a household of four or pay childcare costs -- it's about taking charge of our lives and demanding justice in our workplaces.

We can fight to improve our laws to make it easier for women to find out whether they have been paid fairly and get justice if they haven't. Legislative solutions are crucial, but women also need to feel comfortable and entitled to fight for equal pay throughout their careers, from their first job to their last.

First and foremost, we need to break the silence. So many of the young people I speak with think that talking about money is a taboo. Too often we assume that salaries are to be accepted, not negotiated; that promotions are to be received, not sought after; that raises are to be given, not requested. That's understandable. After all, job market is tough these days, and many Americans -- especially recent college graduates -- feel lucky to have a job at all. But that's no excuse to settle for anything less than 100% of what you're worth.

However, you can't earn what you're worth unless you know what you're worth. Knowledge is power and research is empowering -- do your due diligence to find out what people in similar positions make. That information is out there, and the numbers aren't divided by gender. When you know what you're worth, you're in a much more credible position to negotiate for the salary you deserve.

Once you know what you're worth, ask for it. Negotiation is key, so women need to be prepared to make their case. Recruit friends and family to help you practice; there are also workshops out there that can help you refine this crucial skill. All too often, we wait. We wait to be called up for a performance review, we wait for a cost of living increase, we wait for our boss to promote us. But we don't have to. Take charge. Make your goals clear, and have a timeline to achieve them. When the time comes, act.

Modesty may be a virtue, but the crux of negotiating is learning how to celebrate your accomplishments and use them to your advantage. The more confidently women trumpet their achievements, the more difficult it is for an employer to undervalue her worth.

Fighting for equal pay is crucial to women, their families and the economy at large. But the impact is even greater than that. It demonstrates leadership and commands respect from employers. It dignifies working women everywhere. Like other systemic problems our country has faced, pay discrimination won't disappear on its own. It's hard to believe that in 2012, some employers think they can take advantage of their female employees to make a buck. But it's no surprise that in 2012, women across America are ready to put a stop to it.

Gabon?s President destroys ivory and commits to zero tolerance for wildlife crime

This event follows a period of intense poaching pressure in Central Africa, where the illegal killing of elephants for ivory is at record levels.

A number of dignitaries were present for this historic event, including the President of Gabon, Ali Bongo, who lit the pyre earlier today.

President Bongo spoke of the importance of inviting the international community to witness the symbolic act of destroying the country?s ivory, noting it was a matter of national security.

He told the assembled dignitaries about the special unit Gabon had created within the National Parks Agency to tackle ivory poaching, and how Gabon, as the country with the most elephants in Central Africa, was issuing a strong message to the poachers and traffickers that their actions were unacceptable.

Crucially, President Bongo reiterated that Gabon would work with the Department of Justice to review penalties, and ensure people committing wildlife crimes would be prosecuted and sent to prison.

?Gabon has a policy of zero tolerance for wildlife crime and we are putting in place institutions and laws to ensure this policy is enforced,? he said.

President Bongo also underlined the need for regional co-operation to tackle wildlife crime, whereby anti-poaching measures in one country needed to be followed up by action in neighbouring countries too.

?Today we have witnessed a paramount event for the Central Africa region. It is hugely symbolic that a head of state has taken leadership in sending a signal to the outside world that illegal wildlife trafficking will not be tolerated? said Stefanie Conrad, WWF Central Africa Regional Office Representative.

?Illegal wildlife trade is a crime; it is the fifth largest illicit trade worldwide, and it finances insecurity across Africa. WWF will encourage similar symbolic events in the region to burn and destroy all illegal poached ivory.?

WWF and TRAFFIC worked with Gabon to independently audit its government-owned ivory stockpile before it was destroyed to ensure that all tusks were accounted for and none had leaked into illegal trade.

The audited ivory stock totalled 4,825 kilograms, including 1,293 pieces of rough ivory mainly composed of tusks and 17,730 pieces of worked ivory.

?TRAFFIC keenly anticipates that other nations will follow Gabon?s lead in dealing with their stockpiled ivory and either take it right out of the equation or put in place robust ivory management systems to ensure it can never leak into illegal trade,? said Tom Milliken, TRAFFIC?s ivory trade expert.

African-Americans, Hispanics are fastest adopters of mobile shopping

Over 30pc of African-Americans have used a mobile phone to locate a retailerThe results of a new report from The Integer Group and M/A/R/C Research indicate that multicultural marketing has a big opportunity in mobile, with Hispanic and African American consumers adopting mobile shopping behavior at a faster rate than the total population.

The latest edition of The Checkout report focuses on mobile shoppers and finds that African-Americans outpace the total population in many mobile shopping behaviors, with over 30 percent having used a mobile device to locate a retailer, over 20 percent having used a mobile device to read product reviews and over 20 percent having use mobile to keep a shopping list. By gender, the results also show that women are adopting mobile shopping faster than men.

?The big news is adoption rate of technology amongst women and amongst multi-cultural audiences,? said Craig Elston, senior vice president of insight and strategy at The Integer Group, Denver, CO.

?We tend to think of ?tech? being a guy thing, but the utility that mobile brings to people is something that is being adopted by those groups who are either under time pressure or are maybe leap frogging a generation of tech,? he said.

?Shoppers are slowing changing their habits and starting to view their mobile devices as a shopping aid that helps them organize their shopping list, stretch budgets and find the best deals, inspire them, etc.?

SMS is key
Hispanics take the lead when it comes to using mobile to compare prices, with one in five having done so, according to the report.

African Americans and Hispanics are also more interested in interacting with retailers and brands via mobile while more than half of Caucasians do not want to be contacted. However, because smartphone penetration is lower for these groups, basic SMS and the mobile Web are the best points of entry for brands.

SMS is the No. 1 desired means of interaction for African Americans with over 40 percent preferring this method, while Hispanics engage via a range of methods, including texts, mobile Web sites and apps.

By gender, the results show that while 25 percent of U.S. consumers use their phones to shop, women are adopting? mobile as a shopping tool faster than men.

Accessibility is the main motivator in mobile use for shopping. For women, the second most important aspect is exclusivity while for men it is content. This shows that women are interested in being viewed as savvy shoppers while men want a little something extra for their efforts.

Households with children
Other interesting findings include that consumers from a household where children are present are more tech-savvy.

A greater percentage of shoppers in households with children are using mobile to shop, with 19 percent of consumers in households with children using mobile to make lists while only 13 percent do so in households without children. Additionally, 16 percent of consumers in households with children scan bar codes in the store while only 9 percent do so in households without children.

Similar differentials appear when it comes to brand and retailer interactions via a mobile phone. While 54 percent of non-children households are not interested in this type of engagement, 58 percent of households with children are interested in brand interactions.

The preferred method for this kind of engagement is SMS, with nearly 40 percent of consumers in households with children preferring this method for brand interactions while 30 percent prefer a mobile app.

?I think retailers should keep it simple still,? Mr. Elston said. ?Don?t forget that text is still an incredibly effective method to deliver a relevant and timely message and prove the worth of mobile as a channel, and still the most popular way many shopper look for engagement with brands and retailers.

?Each retailer needs to work out what are the most appropriate behaviors for it to put in place for its brand and its shoppers via mobile,? he said.

Last updated 1 day 2 hours ago

I just read the article below?this morning and found it very helpful so wanted?to share. I find so many?businesses not doing?#12 and?you'll see my?previous blog posts talk about this.?Some of the techniques are more effective than others, some have a?faster learning curves than others but?I tend to agree with these suggestions. I hope you?find them useful.

30 Free Ways To Market Your Small Business Site

By -?Carrie Hill

Are you looking for ways to market your small business website with a limited budget?
?
Whether it?s with established sites such as Google and Facebook, or newer outlets like Pinterest, there are plenty of options available to promote your site.
?
There are at least 30 ways to market your website with a time investment and no credit card required. Some of these are oldies but goodies, while others are newer and exciting avenues you may not have tried out yet.
?
Here are 30 things you can do today to get started marketing your website for free.
?1. Press releases still work. Granted a submission to PRWeb or a Vocus account make the pickup and link benefit much easier, but those cost dollars ? so for this article lets reiterate the best free press release sources: ?24-7PressRelease.com
??PRLog.org
??IdeaMarketers.com
?
2. Send the press release to your local media outlets, or any niche media outlets that may be interested in what you do.

?3. Claim, verify, and update your Google Local Business listing. This is extremely important. Google Local Listings have been absorbed into Google+, so be sure to check out this great resource over at Blumenthals.com to keep up to date on how to manage your Google Local Listing.

?4.?Find a niche social media site that pertains to your exact business and participate. Be helpful, provide relevant and useful information, and your word of mouth advertising will grow from that engagement. ?Examples: ?Travel or hospitality business ? Tripadvisor.com forums
??Photography store ? Photo.net or RockTheShotForum.com
??Wedding Planning or Favor site ? Brides.com or Onewed.com forums
??Search your niche or service plus forums to find ideas. If there isn?t a forum out there, consider starting one.
?

5. Build a Google+ page for your business and follow businesses that are related to your product or service niche. Share informative and relative content and link to your profile from your website. You should also consider allowing users to +1 your content on a page by page basis.
?

?6. Setting up joint benefit with local businesses or others in your niche can help you reach eyes you never did before. Be sure to answer the question "Will my user find this information beneficial as they shop and purchase?" every time you link to a resource, or request a link or listing on another site.
?

?7. Comment and offer original, well thought out, sensible information, opinion and help on blogs that are relevant to your website's topic and be sure to leave your URL. Even if a nofollow tag is attached, you could gain a bit of traffic and some credibility as an authority on the subject matter. This is not blog comment spamming, this is engaging in a conversation relevant to your website's topic.
?

?8. Set up and verify a Webmaster Central Account at Google.
?

?9.?Set up a Bing Webmaster Tools account and verify it.

?10. Update or create your XML sitemap and upload it to Google Webmaster Tools and Bing Webmaster Tools.
?

?11.?Write a "how-to" article that addresses your niche for Wikihow.com or Answers.com. This is kind of fun and a good resource for getting mentions and links. Looking at your product or service in a step-by-step manner is often enlightening in several ways. It can help you better explain your products and services on your own website. I will say I don?t know why some of these sites still rank well, many of them are junk. I do like most of the answers on the two sites mentioned above. Be picky with where you participate.

?12. Write unique HTML page titles for all of your pages. This is still extremely important, don?t skimp on this one.
?

?13. Share your photo

s at Flickr ? get a profile, write descriptions, and link to your website. Don't share photos you don't own or have permission to use.

?14. Start a blog. There's nothing wrong with getting the basics of blogging down by using a free service from Blogger or WordPress.
?

?15. Make sure your Bing and Yahoo Local listings are up to date.
?

?16.?Update and optimize your description and URL at YP.com. They'll try to get you to spend money on an upgraded listing or some other search marketing options. Don't bother with that, but make sure the information is accurate and fresh.
?

?17.?Use your Bing Webmaster Tools account to look at your incoming links. How do they look? Are all of the sites relevant and on-topic? If not, reevaluate your link building practices and start contacting any of the irrelevant sites you can and ask them to take down your link. A clean and relevant incoming link profile is important; cleaning up bad links is a necessity until we can tell Google and Bing which links we want them to ignore.
?

?18.?Make a slideshow of your products or record an original how-to video and upload to YouTube. Be sure to optimize your title and descriptions. Once it's uploaded, write a new page and embed the video on your own Web site. Add a transcription of the video if possible.
?

?19. Try a new free keyword tool for researching website optimization, then see #20.

?20.?Add a page to your site focused on a top keyword phrase you found in #19.

?21.?Build a Facebook Page and work to engage those that are interested in your product or service. Facebook is so much more robust than it ever was! Create groups, events, and photo albums. Link to your Facebook profile from your site and allow visitors to your site to like and share your content.

?22. Install Google Analytics if you don?t have any tracking software. The program is pretty amazing and it's free. You need to do this if you haven?t already. It's that important.
?

?23.?Start Twittering or start doing it much better than you are now ? it's a great way to network with like-minded individuals.

?24.?Pinterest is hot right now. If you have visually stimulating content that is relevant to the site's demographic, you can find great success right now. Be sure you're using solid practices for marketing on Pinterest as you get started.

?25.?Create a new list in Twitter and follow profiles of industry experts you know and trust. Use this as your modern feed reader. I don?t use RSS feed readers anymore. I like content that has been vetted by my peers and is worthy of a tweet or two.

?26.?Try a new way to write an ad for a struggling PPC ad group or campaign.
?

?27.?Review your Google Analytics In-Page insights and take note of how users are interacting with your page. Where to they click, what is getting ignored. Make changes based on this knowledge.

?28. Set up a Google Content Experiment through your Analytics account and test with the information you obtained and changes you made in number 27.

?29.?Build a map at Google Maps and add descriptions for your storefront, locations, and nearby useful points of interest. Make your map public and embed it on your own website. Add links back to relevant content on your site if possible to each point of interest.
?

?30.?Keep reading Search Engine Watch for more free tips and tricks.
?
There you have it ? 30 ways to market your website. Get to work and make something happen! There's no reason to say you can't be successful because you don?t have a huge advertising budget. Time is all you need.

(AP) ? New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees is confident that he and the Saints will agree on a long-term contract.

With the start of training camp about a month off, the two sides still have "a ways to go" to close the gap, the 2010 Super Bowl MVP said Tuesday.

Nonetheless, he said, "I'm confident, and always have been, that we'll get a long-term deal accomplished."

Brees acknowledged that the NFL's bounty investigation into the Saints has slowed down negotiations.

"This has been a stressful offseason in a lot of ways. There's been a lot of distractions for everybody," he said. "I'm not using that as an excuse other than just stating it as fact. That has delayed things quite a bit at times."

And when it comes to that bounty probe, Brees is adamant that the league has not proved money ever changed hands in a pay-to-injure scheme.

"How can everybody think that when there's been no proof that's been put forth thus far?" he said. "There's been an investigation; there's been a lot of stuff put in the media as to what was going on. But is there any proof to back that up? No, there's not. Not yet."

Brees was in New York on Tuesday to discuss a program that provides free concussion testing for more than 3,300 middle and high schools and youth sports organizations. He was joined on a panel by retired New York Rangers goalie Mike Richter, former New York Giants linebacker Carl Banks and ex-U.S. women's soccer team goalkeeper Briana Scurry.

Scurry's career was ended by a concussion more than two years ago, and she still suffers symptoms such as short-term memory loss, she said. Against that backdrop are the allegations that Saints defensive players intended to injure their opponents.

But Brees described the NFL's evidence so far as "hearsay" and "hypotheticals," not the definitive proof needed.

"If there is, then it needs to come forward," he said. "If it is what they say it is, then punishments will be levied and deservedly so. But if there's not, then we need to vindicate the guys that were obviously wrongly accused."

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello responded in an email to The Associated Press that "the evidence is overwhelming."

"The investigation was thorough and includes statements from multiple sources with firsthand knowledge about the details of the program, corroborating documentation and other evidence," Aiello said. "The enforcement of the bounty rule is important to protect players that are put at risk by this kind of scheme. Certainly, Drew Brees would not want to be the target in a bounty scheme and that is why we must eliminate bounties from football."

Even if Brees signs a contract in time and doesn't miss any of training camp, the Saints will be short-handed after the penalties handed out by the NFL in the bounty case. Coach Sean Payton and linebacker Jonathan Vilma have been suspended the entire season. Assistant coach Joe Vitt, the interim replacement for Payton, is banned for six games, while defensive end Will Smith is docked four. General manager Mickey Loomis will miss eight games.

Former Saints defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove, now with Green Bay, was suspended eight games and linebacker Scott Fujita, now with Cleveland, got three games.

"They had a conclusion that they wanted to reach that this was going on," Brees said of the NFL. "So a predetermined conclusion: We're going to gear the investigation and everything toward that conclusion as opposed to let's just gather the facts."

The league accused the Saints of running a bounty system from 2009-11 under former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, who has been suspended indefinitely by Commissioner Roger Goodell and issued an apology for his role in the scandal.

Brees questioned the testimony coaches gave to the NFL.

"A lot those coaches were living in fear of their careers if they did not cooperate," he said.

The Saints placed their one-year franchise tag on Brees, barring him from negotiating with other teams. Brees has skipped voluntary practices and minicamp while holding out for a long-term deal.

"I feel like there's been progress made over the last few weeks," he said. "But there's still a ways to go. I'm hopeful that it will happen sooner than later."

Historic handshake: Queen meets ex-IRA chief

By Sohel Uddin, NBC News

Thirty-five years ago, Queen Elizabeth's silver jubilee was greeted with graffiti declaring "Victory to the IRA, stuff the jubilee."

Wednesday marked a highly significant turnaround as the queen, in her diamond jubilee year, met and shook hands with a?onetime senior Irish Republican Army commander who once stood against everything she represented and even considered her a legitimate target.

As a British person and a journalist, I never thought I'd see this day.

This is because I grew up with Northern Ireland. What does this mean? It means watching with incredulity as the IRA targeted the British establishment, including a sitting prime minister -- almost succeeding in assassinating her.

Coverage of event by NBC News' U.K. partner ITN News

The "troubles," as they were diplomatically called, became part of everyday life. We watched clashes with soldiers on television. News of bombings was a constant drip-drip in the news. It was one of those things that as a boy and a young man, I thought would never end.?

So the meeting with Martin McGuinness, the first between the queen and a senior member of the IRA or its political wing Sinn Fein, is a landmark in the peace process 14 years after the militant group ended its 30-year campaign against British rule.

PhotoBlog: A historic handshake, a historic image in Northern Ireland's peace process

On Tuesday, she held a private meeting with relatives of the 11 people killed in a 1987 bombing in Enniskillen, an?attack that sparked a wave of revulsion against the IRA and helped convince its leadership to engage in the peace process.

3,500 killed
Belfast's Lyric theater, the venue of the historic handshake, has probably never felt so much attention during a performance as it did during the get-together between the British monarchy and Sinn Fein.?

Few will know what the queen was thinking. But surely it was a difficult event for her, and not just because of the more than 3,500 killed in the conflict, 1,800 of whom were innocent civilians, according to The Guardian.

Britain's Queen Elizabeth II shakes hands with Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness in Belfast on Wednesday.

It is doubtless especially poignant for her because her cousin, Lord Mountbatten, was killed in 1979 when the IRA?blew up his boat in Southern Ireland.?He was the man who many believe was responsible for the queen's marriage to Prince Philip, and was a guiding influence to the heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles.

The countless threats her family has lived with must have contributed to a feeling of unease ahead of the meeting. But the queen's real thoughts will probably never be known, nor will her reaction when she was advised to perform this duty.

'It will be difficult': Queen meets IRA victims before landmark handshake

And it wasn't only the queen who was taking a chance -- it came at a cost for McGuinness too. He was being branded a traitor, with a lot of republicans saying that he has sold out and betrayed the principles they stand for.

Republicans protested against Wednesday's meeting, and McGuinness' decision could hurt his political ambitions.

British reaction on a political level has by and large been supportive, despite the bitterness and painful memories of the past.

Norman Tebbit, a former Conservative Party Chairman and a survivor of a deadly bombing in the seaside city of Brighton that targeted Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, saw it as a victory over the IRA.

Before Wednesday's event, Tebbit wrote in?The Telegraph?that the meeting would be a victory for the queen, the monarchy and Great Britain:?

"I am glad that Mr McGuinness appears to have now accepted on behalf of IRA/Sinn Fein the sovereignty of Her Majesty over Northern Ireland, and I hope that this is a step towards a public recompense and confession of his regret for the violence unleashed by them in his name."

While the meeting does not mark the end of tensions in Northern Ireland, it draws a line under a conflict that cost the lives of thousands and beset the queen for half of her reign.

NY crooks nab left shoe in 1 shop, right from 2nd

(AP) ? Thieves in New York City have started a new sneaker trend.

The New York Post reports (http://nyp.st/PZu5d2 ) that crooks have figured out they can steal the left shoe from the display in one store and the matching right shoe from another store's display.

The owner of one Bronx sneaker store says the thieves do their research. They know before they steal a left shoe which store has a right shoe of the same size and style on display.

A store manager in SoHo says he loses about 50 display shoes a year to thieves.

Some store owners are tying shoes to display walls so no one will walk off with them.

"Twisted" OAM Beams Carry 2.5 Terabits Per Second

yet in the U.S. Internet access speeds and costs have remained stagnant.

lolwut? These are just approximate dates and speeds from memory, so I may be off by a few years but the gist of it is about right:

25 years ago, I had 300 baud dialup. 20 yeas ago, I had 14.4Kb dialup 15 years ago, I had something like 56Kb dialup 12 years ago, I had 256 Kb DSL 10 years ago, I had 3 Mb cable 5 years ago, I had 6 Mb cable today, I have 15 Mb cable (and some people have stuff like FIOS)

The details will be different for everyone, but unless you're going to tell me everyone but me was using multiple Mb connections in the 1980's, I'm going to have to call bullshit on that claim. US access speeds have been steadily increasing every since I've been watching them, and they've continued to do so in the last few years. My connection went from 6 to 15 MB just a year or two ago.

Over here in Finland, just over the past few years my connection speed has gone from 10/1Mb/s to 200/15Mb/s (cable, uncapped) while the price has gone down from 49 euro/month to 14 euro/month. Have the prices dropped similarly in the US?

Before You Finalise a Domain Name for Your Website

A domain name is the unique name that identifies a website on the internet. Examples of domain names are Olivewebhosting.com, Maxhealthcare.in and Google.com. Domain names should be chosen only after a careful analysis and research. If you?re planning to launch an online business, make sure you pick a domain name which is effective and in line, with the kind of business you?re in. If you?re not sure as to the domain names, it?s good to hire the services of a leading web hosting company India.

Not only it?ll help you with choosing the most-appropriate domain name, it?ll be there when you?ll need hosting services for your site. Though there are numerous hosting companies around, you should go with the one which has been in the business for years and has a proven track record.

You?ll pick your domain name from a range of extension options such as .com, .in, .co.in, .org, .biz and .info.

Make sure you chosen domain name is easily indexable and helps in better search-engine crawling of your site. Of course, there are a whole lot of other stuffs that need to be taken into consideration when it comes to pushing a site upwards on search-engines like Google, but having a unique URL is good.

If you?re not sure about which web hosting company India you should go with, then, go Google. Type your query in the search-box and see all possible options before your eyes; compare your options and go with the best option possible so that you get your site up and running all the time.

Remember your domain name should be easy to pronounce and type; it should be easy to remember as well.

Imagine a site with a URL like this: www.hitkopar123nyouzone.com, you probably won?t be able to remember this URL; on the other hand, URLs like Google.com are easy to remember. So, do spare some time for market research and analysis before you decide on one particular domain name for your site.

Last but not the least, having a professional web hosting company India or web application hosting company by your side is always a great idea. And, with numerous hosting companies out there, you won?t have to face much of a trouble in finding an ideal company for your site. Search Google if you already have no idea about these companies. South Africa to toughen smoking law

Johannesburg

Health authorities are working at tightening South Africa?s anti-smoking laws, proposing a total ban on indoor smoking and even making it illegal to puff away in open spaces such as beaches.

Stadiums, zoos, parks, outdoor eateries and beer gardens would all be affected. At beaches, smoking would only be allowed at least 50 metres from the closest person.

But before introducing any new law, the health ministry will throw open the proposals to the public in discussions next week.

Article continues below

It is the second time in five years that South Africa has tried to amend its legislation to make it even harder for smokers to indulge in their habit.

Even before the regulations are debated and final decisions made however, many smokers are fuming, labelling the plans as ?extreme?, ?shameless? and an intrusion on people?s rights.

Hysteria

?It?s a kind of hysteria, a kind of peculiar semi-religious fundamentalist puritanism,? said Leon Louw, director of the Free Market Foundation, a think tank pushing for an open society free of regulations.

?It?s a kind of vicious assault on other peoples? choices and lifestyles.?

If the regulations went through they could constitute a breach of freedom and even result in job losses, the foundation suggests.

?The anti-tobacco fanatics... the nicotine nazis or nico-nazis obviously will not stop until it?s full prohibition,? he added.

In 2007, lawmakers approved a litany of changes that sought to close loopholes in the Tobacco Products Control Act of 1993.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court of Appeal upheld that law?s blanket ban on tobacco ads.

It rejected a lawsuit brought by British American Tobacco SA, which had argued that the restrictions infringed on the company?s free speech rights.

Stringent proposals

Buoyed by that case, anti-smoking lobbyists are rejoicing at the latest stringent proposals.

?It goes the next step to protect health and we think it will work practically,? said Peter Ucko, director of the National Council Against Smoking.

Pro-smoking lobbyists argue that enforcing such a broad ban would be impossible, but Ucko insisted the laws will work.

Since the 2007 regulations, ?no one smokes in shopping malls anymore,? he said.

Hoteliers appear unfazed by the pending changes.

?There may be certain discomfort for restaurants and pubs, but for the hotels, I don?t think there will be an impact from the revenue point of view,? said Eddie Khosa of the Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa. If the changes are adopted, South Africa would become the first African country to go smoke-free.

There were some 7.7 million adult tobacco users in South Africa last year, lighting up an estimated 27 billion cigarettes, according to the Tobacco Institute of Southern Africa.

But these numbers are 30-per cent down on those from 10 years ago.

What If Walmart Sold 2500 Guns Illegally, Walked Them into Mexico, and Hid the Documentation from Congress?

23 Jun 2012, 11:26 AM PDT post a comment

These things got me to thinking?what would these same politicians and media personalities have said if a privately-owned business had done the things our DOJ, ATF, and other government agencies did via Fast and Furious?

What if Walmart, the ?largest seller of firearms and ammunition in America,? had knowingly sold 2,500 firearms to straw purchasers with the intent of having those purchasers carry those guns across an international border and sell them to drug cartel members in Mexico?

And,what if at least two (but possibly three or more) of the guns were used in the murder of a U.S. Border Patrol agent while an untold number of the weapons were used to kill hundreds?literally hundreds?of Mexican citizens?

Moreover, what if one of the straw purchasers, who bought over 700 guns, was on food stamps and Walmart knew it, yet they sold him guns in exchange for bags of cash anyway?

What if some of the 2,500 hundred guns were recovered, but more than 1,000 were not, and what if an untold number of those unrecovered guns were believed to be in the hands of criminals in American cities on our Southwest border?

And lastly, what if explanations given by Walmart board members regarding the authorization of this straw-purchasing, gun-walking program were in conflict with the testimony given by their executive? And what if both they and their executive snubbed their noses at Congressional requests for documentation that would explain who knew what and when?

What would happen to Walmart if that company did these things?

We all know what would happen. Both their C.E.O. and ranking board members would be handcuffed and frog-marched out to paddy wagons in broad daylight, then transported to prison cells that would house them for the rest of their lives.

And Rep. Pelosi wouldn?t even think about saying, ?They are treating the C.E.O. of Walmart this way for doing his job.?

Singles try to sniff out love at pheromone parties

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Sniff your way to love? Singles who have attended so-called pheromone parties haven't ruled it out.

The get-togethers ? which have been held in New York and Los Angeles and are planned for other cities ? ask guests to submit a slept-in T-shirt that will be smelled by other participants.

Then, voila! You can pick your partner based on scent, or so the theory goes.

The parties started out as an experimental matchmaking fest by a California woman weary of online dating, but it turns out they also have a root in science. Researchers have shown that humans can use scent to sort out genetic combinations that could lead to weaker offspring.

At a dimly lit art gallery in Los Angeles on a recent night, partygoers huddled around several tables covered with plastic freezer bags stuffed with shirts and an index card bearing a number. Once they found one they liked, a photographer snapped a picture of them holding the bag and projected it onto a wall so the shirt's rightful owner could step forward and meet his or her odor's admirer.

Konstantin Bakhurin, a 25-year-old neuroscience graduate student, said he bypassed the bags that smelled like baby powder or laundry detergent or perfume in search of something more unique: the owner of a distinctive yellow-T-shirt whose fragrance he described as "spicy."

"I think it's probably a bit more pseudoscience," said Bakhurin, who attended with two fellow graduate students from University of California, Los Angeles. "I just kind of came here for kicks to see what would happen."

The parties are a marked contrast to the proliferation of online dating sites, which demand countless details from singles, and in some ways are taking romance back to its most primal beginnings.

Judith Prays, a web developer who now lives in Atlanta, said she came up with the idea for pheromone parties after she failed to find a match online. Prays said she'd date men for a month or so before things soured until she started seeing a man who wasn't what she was looking for and wound up in a two-year relationship.

What she remembered was his smell.

"Even when he smelled objectively bad, I thought he smelled really good," the 25-year-old said. "And so I thought, OK, maybe I should be dating based on smell?"

At first, it was an experiment. Prays invited 40 friends to a party in New York and asked them to sleep in a T-shirt for three nights, put it in a plastic bag and freeze it, then bring it to the party. Bags were coded with blue cards for men and pink for women and numbered so the shirts' owners could pinpoint their admirers.

The night was a hit, Prays said, adding that half a dozen couples hooked up and one pair formed a relationship. Since then, she has held similar parties in New York and Los Angeles and is planning others for Atlanta, San Francisco and perhaps elsewhere.

Many partygoers chuckled at the idea of finding a match in a smelly T-shirt. But that's not to say there isn't some science supporting the idea.

Research studies using similar T-shirt experiments have shown that people prefer different human scents. But whose smell they prefer is dictated by a set of genes that influence our immune response ? which researchers say is nature's way of preventing inbreeding and preserving genetic adaptations developed over time.

"Humans can pick up this incredibly small chemical difference with their noses," said Martha McClintock, founder of the Institute for Mind and Biology at the University of Chicago. "It is like an initial screen."

In one such study, McClintock and her colleagues had participants sniff inside a covered box without knowing that in some cases they were smelling worn T-shirts. What they found was people preferred the odors of those who had different genetic makeups from their own, but not radically different.

In Los Angeles, several dozen 20-somethings headed to the gallery at night in search of romance ? or at least out of curiosity. They posed playfully for the photographer with shirts they liked, hoping the owner might step forward and say hello.

Few did. Some admitted they had seen their number flashed on the wall but were too shy to identify themselves.

But there was still plenty of chatter as beer-sipping singles turned up their noses at bags that smelled like hiker's sweat and their aunt's old carpet and took a second whiff of sweet and musky fragrances they liked but couldn't peg ? a playful exercise that served as an icebreaker to what otherwise could have been an awkward gathering of strangers.

Karen Arellano threw back her head and laughed after trying a handful of bags that reeked of sweat, coffee and even weed ? but said she didn't really come to the party in search of love.

"I don't think I'm going to find anything more than, 'Hi, how are you,' a conversation," the 29-year-old baker said. "That's expectation enough."

Prays said she's also learned from the experience that while scent is powerful, it isn't enough to detect a good match.

"Animals have babies and they move on, and that's what the pheromone party is," said Prays, who may start including a few pertinent details on the index cards, like a person's relationship expectations. "The most successful thing about it is it opens up conversation."

There's little good humor in ice cream shortage

Courtesy of Good Humor

By Eve Tahmincioglu

There?s nothing like enjoying a Chocolate Eclair from a Good Humor truck on a hot summer day; munching on the cake coating and vanilla ice cream in order to get to the fudge center.

You know you want one now.

Alas, it may be a while before your local Good Humor man, or woman, will be selling the creamy treat.

The Eclair, along with two other Good Humor classics -- Toasted Almond, Candy-Center Crunch ? are victims of a shortage and you may not be able to get the products until later this summer.

?Primarily due to the unprecedented warm spring weather, as well as the routine challenges presented when production moves from one plant to others, some iconic Good Humor brands are in shorter supply via mobile vending units,? said Caroline Krajewski, a spokeswoman for Unilever, the parent Dutch company that produces the products.

The company announced last year it was shuttering its Hagerstown, MD, ice cream plant by 2013, and would be laying off about 400 employees. The plant produced the classics that are now in short supply, but Krajewski wouldn?t comment on whether the company was rethinking its decision.

One of the first Good Humor trucks

For all you ice cream lovers upset about the shortage, don?t panic yet. Turns out the three ice cream products are still available at your local grocery story.

But there?s just something nostalgic about getting a cool treat from those Good Humor trucks, which first hit the road equipped with freezers in 1920. Their creator, Harry Burt, used his son?s bobsled bells on one of the first models.

What?s your favorite ice cream truck ice cream treat??
