NASA sees Hurricane Isaac make double landfall in Louisiana

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Hurricane Isaac is continuing to drop heavy rainfall over Louisiana and Mississippi, and NASA's TRMM satellite identified that rainfall as the storm was making landfall.

On Aug. 29, 2012 at 1 p.m. EDT, Isaac was still a hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 75 mph (120 kmh). Isaac was located about 10 miles northwest (15 km) of Houma, Louisiana and moving slowly. It is moving to the northwest near 6 mph (9 km). Isaac continued bringing heavy rainfall to southeastern Louisiana and southern Mississippi. The threat for dangerous coastal storm surge and inland flooding are expected to continue overnight.

The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite flew over Hurricane Isaac twice on the night that Isaac made landfall in Louisiana and headed for New Orleans. TRMM is a joint mission managed by both NASA and JAXA, the Japanese Space Agency.

In the first of the two overflights, the TRMM radar saw two hot towers in the eyewall of Hurricane Isaac just hours before landfall. While hot towers were shooting up in the eyewall over the ocean, Isaac's inner rainband was already lashing Louisiana with heavy rain. Hot towers are common in intensifying tropical cyclones are are a sign that energy is being pumped into the hurricane from the ocean's surface. A "hot tower" is a tall cumulonimbus cloud that reaches at least to the top of the troposphere, the lowest layer of the atmosphere. It extends approximately nine miles (14.5 km) high in the tropics.

Two images were created by Owen Kelley, of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. The background of the first image showed TRMM infrared observations that give a sense of the height of the cloud cover the hides the heavy precipitation inside of of the hurricane. The blue-gray 3D volume contains the light precipitation inside the hurricane, using a 20 dBZ radar-reflectivity threshold.

In the image, an insert reveals details at the center of the hurricane. Two hot towers are indicated by the yellow and orange colors. They are locations where strong updrafts are lifting frozen precipitation above a 14.5 km (9.1 mile) threshold. Water that condenses in updrafts will soon freeze if updrafts lift it above the zero-degree isotherm near 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) altitude. The freezing releases another boost of latent heat, the fuel of hurricanes, following the initial release of latent heat when the water vapor condenses into liquid.

The TRMM radar happened to overfly Hurricane Isaac again just five hours later, shortly after the eyewall made landfall. Robbed of its oceanic source of energy, the eyewall hot towers are gone in this later overflight. Instead of reaching 14.5 km (9.1 mile) altitude, the eyewall merely reaches a 10 km (6.2 mile) altitude, which is indicated by the light green shading at the top of the blue-green volume of light precipitation.

Unfortunately for New Orleans and surrounding areas, TRMM sees that Hurricane Isaac's eyewall was remarkably well organized at that time, despite having made landfall. The insert shows a ring of very intense radar echos in red, echos that exceed 40 dBZ radar reflectivity. The northwest quadrant of his ring of heavy precipitation is almost on top of New Orleans at the time of observation.

Pigeons vanish in the 'Birdmuda Triangle'

Hundreds of racing pigeons have been disappearing over a sleepy pocket of North East England, earning the region a reputation as the "Birdmuda Triangle."?

On Saturday, the Telegraph reported, one club of pigeon fanciers released a flock of 230 birds from North Yorkshire. Only 13 birds arrived at their destination in Scotland.

Some of the aggrieved hobbyists ? who routinely release trained pigeons tasked with finding their way home from distances of hundreds of miles ? are now considering grounding their remaining birds until the mystery is solved.

Pigeons have long baffled scientists with their uncanny navigational abilities. Earlier this year, researchers at Baylor College identified one component of the birds' internal GPS when they showed that their brains contain a specialized group of cells that measure the strength and direction of the Earth's magnetic field, serving as a compass.? [ 9 Weird Animal Facts ]

But what special property of a triangular region in North East England ? marked off by places called Wetherby, Corsett and Thirsk, and measuring 65 miles (105 km) on its longest side ? could be capable of short-circuiting a pigeon's sense of home?

Some racers have implicated a nearby military intelligence operation, blaming rogue signals from the Royal Air Force's Menwith Hill satellite station for jamming their birds' instincts.

"There's been a fair amount of experimentation on the effect of radio signals on pigeon orientation," said Charles Walcott, a professor of neurobiology and behavior at Cornell University who has been studying pigeons since 1962. "No one has ever seen any substantial effect."

Others have attributed losses to unusually high levels of solar activity that they say have distorted the Earth's magnetic field and, by extension, their pigeons' mental maps. (Though it is merely following its normal cycle, the sun has been increasingly active lately.)

According to Walcott, researchers have shown that disruptions in the Earth's magnetic field caused by solar flares do in fact jog pigeons' internal compasses, changing the initial direction the birds choose to set off in when they're first released. But a nationwide study published in the now-defunct Racing Pigeon Bulletin examined the results of pigeon races alongside variations in the Earth's magnetic field and concluded that, in the United States at least, there was no correlation.

"But (the Racing Pigeon Bulletin study) doesn't rule out the idea," he told Life's Little Mysteries. "It just says that over a big area there was no obvious effect; it doesn't mean that there couldn't be one in a small area."

Walcott's pick for the most plausible cause of England's pigeon losses happens also to be the most likely explanation for the real Bermuda Triangle's undue reputation as a mystical devourer of ships and men: bad weather.

    2. Scientists study dinosaurs' last meals
    3. Pigeons vanish in the 'Birdmuda Triangle'
    4. Glowing fish help seals hunt in the dark

The Telegraph reports that the section of North East England in question has been experiencing abnormally high rainfall, and some of the racers have proposed that missing pigeons may have been led far afield by their efforts to avoid storms.

"I think that explanation's quite likely," said Walcott. "Pigeons really do not like to fly in the rain because their feathers are not equipped for it, so in my experience pigeons will simply put down until the rain has passed."

As for where last weekend's 217 unaccounted-for racing birds headed when the sun came back out, Walcott says we may never know. He's heard of mass disappearances at U.S. races before, and for some of the pigeon fanciers at those events, answers still haven't surfaced.

"(T)hose pigeons that are lost, many of them find other pigeon lofts and go in. But some just plain disappear and you never see them again, and I don't think anyone understands what's going on," he said.

BBC iPlayer adds radio support to Xbox app

BBC iPlayer adds radio support to Xbox app

Well, they certainly made you wait for it, but the BBC has finally delivered on its promise, bringing radio support to its Xbox 360 app. When iPlayer launched on the console in March, patient customers were initially left without access to the national network's vast catalog of audio programming. With today's 22MB update that changes, but only so long as you're sticking with archived materials. You'll have access to the catch up feature, but no live streaming (so don't expect to get your breaking news through your Xbox). You'll also be able to pick up where you left off with previously accessed programs. If you've got an urge to find out about all the work that went into the UI design, hit up the source.

Do All Women Need Protection From Sexually Transmitted Diseases ...

Do all women need protection from sexually transmitted diseases can be a very sensitive subject when discussing women?s health care. There is a fine line between what women need and what their morals affect and it should be a personal decision for every woman. A decision about health protection should not be taken lightly either.

Vaccinations protecting a woman from cervical cancer for instance may be very important for women of any age who are sexually active with different partners. However, a woman who is faithful and is married to the same partner, assuming that partner is also faithful may not? be in need of the vaccine that protects against cervical cancer. This is just one example of what a vaccine does to protect a woman and how her personal choices and life style influence what protection she might need.

Birth control methods should not be considered necessarily a protection against a sexually transmitted disease. The birth control pill for instance does not protect a woman against HIV/Aids, chlamydia, or any venereal disease. It protects against pregnancy only.

A woman has many choices about her health and her sexual health should always be at the top of the list when thinking about protection and prevention. Routine pelvic exams and breast exams by a reliable health care provider are an essential part of women?s health. Make it your goal to make your appointment soon if you have not had a check up within the last year. It could mean your health. You can discuss your lifestyle and your concerns about prevention at your appointment so that you are doing all you can to protect your female health.

Listen to the first song sent from Mars

Musician will.i.am tells the story behind "Reach for the Stars," the first song broadcast from another planet.

By Alan Boyle

Hip-hop musician will.i.am's "Reach for the Stars" officially became the first song broadcast from Mars today, thanks to a signal beamed from NASA's Curiosity rover.

"This is the first time that a song's ever come from another planet," Leland Melvin, NASA's associate administrator for education and a former astronaut, told students at an educational event at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

On one level, the song's airing at JPL was as much of an audio and photo op as Monday's broadcast of a statement from NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, which represented?"the first human voice broadcast from Mars." But on another level, the blend of space exploration and pop culture fueled the already-high interest in Curiosity's $2.5 billion mission on Mars.

"Mars has always fascinated us, and the things Curiosity tells us about it will help us learn about whether or not life was possible there, and what future human explorers can expect," Bolden said in a NASA statement. "Will.i.am has provided the first song on our playlist of Mars exploration."?

Inspiring the next generation
The event was also aimed at inspiring the next generation of explorers, engineers and scientists: Among the listeners in the JPL audience were students from Boyle Heights ??the L.A. suburb where will.i.am, one of the stars of the Black Eyed Peas, grew up.

"I'm a little nervous, because my mom's in the audience," will.i.am joked. He said he wanted to inspire the kids in his old neighborhood "so that you guys don't ever think about leaving it, but changing it."

Believe it or not, this isn't the first time people tried to have a song broadcast from Mars. The European Space Agency arranged for its Beagle 2 lander to transmit a tune recorded by the British rock group Blur as the first signal confirming that spacecraft's safe landing in 2003. Unfortunately, that lander went out of contact during its descent and was never heard from again.

This time, the experiment worked.

Well after Curiosity's successful landing on Aug. 5, "Reach for the Stars" was uploaded to the rover's onboard computer and then transmitted back to NASA's Deep Space Network antennas on Earth. Flight director Bobak Ferdowsi, who has achieved Internet fame in his own right as "NASA Mohawk Guy," cued up the four-minute audio clip at the appointed time today. The rover wasn't broadcasting in real time: There's currently a nearly 15-minute communication gap for Curiosity's communications, due to the time it takes radio signals to travel the roughly 166 million miles (267 million kilometers) between Earth and Mars.

How the song got started
Will.i.am said the Mars Curiosity project had its genesis in "i.am.FIRST," an ABC-TV special on robotics and science education that he helped fund for broadcast last year. As a result of the success of that program, Bolden asked will.i.am to become involved in NASA's educational outreach program, and in response, the musician asked whether the space agency had anything special coming up.

"He said, 'We have a rocket going to Mars,'" will.i.am recalled. "So I said, 'Hey, have you ever thought about putting a song on the rocket, so when the rocket lands, the song comes back to Earth?' That's never happened before. So he said, 'Who's gonna do the song?' I said, 'Are you serious? Damn!'"

The musician said he intentionally went with an orchestral sound (with a 40-piece ensemble) instead of the usual hip-hop or dance beat. "I didn't want to do a song that was done on a computer," he said. "I wanted to show human collaboration ... and something that would be timeless, and translated in different cultures."

Will.i.am said the point of the song wasn't just about spaceflight.

"It's a reminder that anything is possible if you discipline yourself, and dedicate yourself and stand for something," he said. "Every single person that's a part of NASA stood for something, and we have this wonderful technology?? the phone you have in your hand, and small computers. If it wasn't for their discipline and their relentless research and efforts, we wouldn't have these small computers. We don't have to just end up in the 'hood. But it's a hard thing. The hardest thing is discipline. Everything else is easy."

During today's event, the musician's i.am angel Foundation and Discovery Education announced a $10 million classroom education initiative focusing on STEAM themes (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics). NASA said the Discovery Education initiative will incorporate content from the space agency and space exploration themes as part of its curriculum. The initiative will aim to reach 25 million students annually.

Why they say the sky is the limit
When I?ve seen the footprints on the moon
Why do they say the sky is the limit
When I?ve seen the footprints on the moon
And I know the sky might be high
But baby it ain?t really that high
And I know that Mars might be far
But baby it ain?t really that far
Let?s reach for the stars

Reach for the stars
Let?s reach for the stars
Reach for the stars
Let?s reach for the stars
Reach for the stars
Let?s reach for the stars

(Let, let, let, let me see your hands up)
(Let me see your hands up)

Can?t nobody hold us back
They can?t hold us down
They can?t keep us trapped
Tie us to the ground
Told your people that
We don?t mess around
When we turn it up
Please don?t turn us down
We will turn it up
Louder than we were before
Like the lion out the jungle, you can hear us roar
When I lie in here, it?s like a sonic blaster
Flying just like NASA, out of space master

Hands up, reach for the sky
Hands up, get ?em up high
Hands up, if you really feel alive
Live it up, live it up

Why they say the sky is the limit
When I?ve seen the footprints on the moon
Why do they say the sky is the limit
When I?ve seen the footprints on the moon
And I know the sky might be high
But baby it ain?t really that high
And I know that Mars might be far
But baby it ain?t really that far
Let?s reach for the stars

Reach for the stars
Let?s reach for the stars
Reach for the stars
Let?s reach for the stars
Reach for the stars
Let?s reach for the stars

Matt LeBlanc Leasing 1930's Spanish Estate in Pacific Palisades ...

Matt LeBlanc, star of Friends and Lost in Space, has put a ?For Rent? sign in the window of his home in Pacific Palisades, CA. The veteran actor, who currently plays a fictional version of himself on the acclaimed Showtime comedy Episodes, is asking just under $13,000 a month to lease the classic Spanish-style estate.

Matt LeBlancs 1930?s Spanish Estate in Pacific Palisades Leasing For $13,000 (PHOTOS) photo

Located just south of Will Rogers State Park, the home, built in 1933, offers 3,930-square-feet with four bedrooms and five bathrooms. A step-down living room with a fireplace, a dark wood-paneled dining room, and numerous built-ins highlight the home?s finer features, while a cook?s kitchen sports an updated face thanks to a recent remodel. Head to rear of the half-acre property and one will find rolling lawns and a manicured garden that give way to panoramic canyon views.

The Friends alumni flexed some serious real estate muscle in 2011, as Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer and Matthew Perry, in particular, went ham on the market in some way, shape or form. However, the sitcom cast members have been a tad quieter in 2012, at least in terms of buying and selling homes. The only notable transaction this year has come by way of Aniston, who made waves in January for her $21 million purchase of an exceptional A. Quincy Jones masterpiece in Los Angeles.

Joint Venture Partners ? How To Find Them For ... - Web Design Box

One of the easiest ways to get an online business up and running is to engage in joint venture marketing. You?ll find many different ways to market online but none come close to joint ventures for delivering fast results. What can you expect when you become involved in a joint venture partnership?

Solve Your Business Problems: When you begin using joint venture marketing, you will see that the issues that you are seeing that are associated with low sales, bad leads and low return on investment will soon go away. This is most because your joint venture partner will aid you in getting exposed to your target market. This is so that you can provide the best offers and get highly concentrated results. Save A Lot of Time: Just envision all of the time that you will not waste if you conduct a joint venture with the correct partner. You are able to push your business to the next level immediately and see a huge amount of sales very quickly. No Charge or Low Cost Advertising: Starting a joint venture usually supplies the chance to advertise services to your specific market without the added stress of accounting for ROI. This is because your investment is practically zero. Quite simply, you will only have to make a payment when you see results. Offer Your Customers More: An effective joint venture allows you to build your buyer?s list in a short amount of time. Since these visitors have already bought something from you, there will not be any problems promoting other products to them in the near future. You will make more money on the backend.

Obtain Authoritative Testimonials: The other businesses that you joint venture with are an expert in their own sense.

When you let them catch a glimpse of and review your items, you?ll gather responses. These reactions are crucial as you can utilize them on your website as an authoritative testimonial. People trust experts and seeing such feedback will increase your sales. Attain More Members: A troublesome that several online businesses to handle is increasing their connection base; by carrying out a joint venture, you?ll have the ability to gain more targeted connections, which will evidently play a role in your business on the whole. All businesses on the internet would love to have more earn a living from home; however you do not want to cause unexpected problems just because you did not have all the facts about it, beforehand. Maybe you know the importance of solid market research which is good because that is how you can communicate successfully with them. In addition to knowing how to talk to your market, you will understand their needs from a marketing perspective. Naturally you want your campaigns to work the best they can, and that is perhaps the primary benefit. This research, as we have stated, will more specifically give you the ability to speak the language of any audience. Even in the shortest marketing message, your words must still be able to build that bridge through strong identification with what you say and how you say it. Build Upon Your Email List: It does not matter if you are maintaining a magazine or giving away reports for free, if you are initiating a joint venture, you can get more people to join your list. The greatest thing about using this strategy is that you will get very targeted leads. Finally, this article lets you see how important joint venture marketing is and why it can help your business no matter what niche you are in.

A paint-by-numbers portrait of changing nation

WASHINGTON (AP) ? We're heavier in pounds and hotter by degrees than Americans of old. We're starting to snub our noses at distant suburbs after generations of burbs in our blood. Our roads and bridges are kind of a mess. There are many more poor, and that's almost sure to get worse.

The oddly American obsession with picking up and moving on ? "this spectacle of so many lucky men restless in the midst of abundance," as Alexis de Tocqueville noted nearly 200 years ago ? has given way to the un-American activity of going nowhere. But check back tomorrow.

Such swirling changes are not fodder for a State of the Union speech, but they are part of the state of the union nonetheless, on the eve of the Republican National Convention opening Monday and the Democratic convention that follows it a week later. The country that President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are vying to lead for the next four years is not quite the same as the one four years ago, not nearly the same as the one further back in time.

Our taste for McMansions, for example, has slightly soured in recent years in favor of more affordable abodes.

We, like, speak differently than our forebears, new twists on the same tongue. LOL.

Soldiers are flowing home from the wars; this is almost what peace looks like.

A paint-by-the-numbers portrait:

___

WHERE WE LIVE

Like much else, where we live is shaped by how ? or whether ? we make a living. But larger forces than that seem to be at work in determining Americans' chosen places.

U.S. cities and closely surrounding areas are experiencing more growth than farther-off suburbs for the first time in at least 20 years. The cost and bother of commuting are part of the reason. The average commuter spends over 30 hours stuck in traffic per year, says the Texas Transportation Institute, up from 14 hours in 1982. That's the time spent going nowhere or at a crawl.

As well, city life is becoming the choice of more young and old people, as the attractions and convenience rival the long-held American dream of affordable home ownership, which usually means farther out.

Meantime, the historic migration of Southern blacks to the North has reversed, with black populations rising in Southern cities and suburbs, especially among the more affluent.

But the overarching recent development in where we live is that we aren't moving much at all.

Mobility is the lowest it's been in the 60 years it has been tracked by the Census Bureau, with only 11.6 percent of the nation's population moving in the past year. That's just over half the level in 1951, the biggest year for Americans on the move, 21.2 percent. More adult children are living with parents because of economic hardship, fewer older people are able to retire to sunny climes and the housing bust further contributed to locking the restless in place.

Average home size dropped 5 percent from 2007 to 2010, to a little under 2,400 square feet. It's still a far cry from the 750-square-foot, one-story, 2-bedroom Levittown prototypes that sparked the suburban boom and brought modest homes within reach of the masses after World War II.

Though they paved paradise and put up housing lots, the U.S. remains heavily treed. One-third of its land area is forested, a proportion that has been stable since the beginning of the past century. But after the devastation of American chestnuts that grew by the billions in Eastern forests and of the elms that gave so many towns an Elm Street, today's forests and urban greenery are not the same as in the past.

Meantime asphalt and iron have fallen into disrepair: Nearly one in four of the country's 605,086 bridges is rated deficient.

___

HOW WE COMMUNICATE

Until World War II in residential areas and well beyond in rural America, telephone party lines were common. If you wanted to make a phone call, you had to wait for Velma down the road to finish gossiping on the same line, interrupt the chitchat to ask her to hang up ? or just cover the speaker and eavesdrop on the juicy details. (Velma was a popular name from the 1890s through the 1930s, then no more). In party-line days, a major technological advance came when Ma Bell developed distinct rings for different homes on the line, so everyone didn't pick up each time the phone jangled.

These days, the dedicated landline that took over from the party line is itself fading, as Americans' favorite gadget, the cellphone, spreads in numbers and smarts.

The number of people with wireless only and no traditional landline phone has grown fourfold since 2005, the government estimates. In 2005, less 8 percent of adults lived in households with only wireless telephones. Now it's more than 32 percent. Nearly nine in 10 adults own a cell.

The day Obama's Democratic convention opened in 2008, Facebook announced its 100 millionth user, a benchmark it actually took longer to reach than its now-overshadowed rival, Myspace. Facebook is closing in on its billionth user, sitting with Twitter as kings of the social-media mountain until something else knocks them off.

___

WHO WE ARE

Fatter. The average woman has gained 18 pounds since 1990, to 160 pounds; the average man is up 16 pounds, to 196, Gallup found.

Poorer as a whole, but richer than during the recession. The value of people's homes, stocks and all other assets stood at $62.9 trillion in March, the latest count, down from $66 trillion before the economy tanked but up from $51.3 trillion at the downturn's depths.

Indebted, but perhaps not up to the eyeballs. Credit card debt has declined about 14 percent since 2008. Americans also have less mortgage debt, but more student debt and auto loans. The savings rate, meantime, climbed to 4.2 percent last year, a big improvement from 1.5 percent in 2005. But then there is the government. It is indebted past the eyeballs.

Hotter: The period from July 2011 to June 2012 was the warmest 12-month stretch on record. Altogether, the contiguous states posted an annual all-season average temperature of 56 degrees in that period, which is 3.3 degrees hotter than either of the years that Obama and Romney were born. The hottest calendar year on record for the U.S. is 1998, at 55.08 degrees, but that may not last this year's swelter and lack of winter. Most of the past 15 years have been among the steamiest on the books, and all 15 were hotter than Romney's birth year, 1947, and Obama's, 1961.

More numerous. The U.S. has 314 million people. The country surpassed 200 million in 1968 and 300 million in 2006.

More diverse. For the first time, more than half the children born in the U.S. are racial or ethnic minorities, and by 2040 or several years after, non-Hispanic whites are expected to become a minority of the population. Along with this trend has come a historic jump in interracial marriages, which now make up an estimated 8.4 percent of marriages, up from 3.2 percent in 1980.

Addicted to texting. Cellphone users sent an average of 13 text messages a day in December 2008, double the number from a year earlier, the government said. More recently, Pew researchers found the average teen sent more than 64 texts a day.

Older. Between 2000 and 2010, the population of people aged 45 to 64 grew by close to one-third as the baby boom generation and those behind it grayed. That has helped to push the median age to 37.2 ? half the population younger than that, half over.

A lot of those young people are named Sophia, the top girl's name for the first time, and Jacob, No. 1 choice for boys for the past 13 years. So long Mary and James, the dominant names over 100 years.

___

WHAT WE THINK:

On the issues of the day, the economy has no near rival atop the list of concerns. Pocketbook matters often rule but Americans were heavily focused on war in the early going of the last campaign. As the recession deepened, though, and now with troops coming home, it's been the economy plain and simple ? the issue ranked important by more than 9 in 10 respondents to an AP-GfK poll out this past week.

About half of us approve of the job Obama is doing, the poll found. About half disapprove. Voters are about evenly split on the race, and among those who lean to one man or the other, very few are open to changing their minds. Obama's years-ago vision of a nation of united states soaring above the divisions of red states and blue states seems a pipe dream in a fractious time.

The sharp lines and stagnant views are evident in public opinion on gun laws, abortion, health care, taxes and the federal budget deficit ? on which polling has long shown wide divergence. The Pew Research Center reports that partisan polarization on basic policy questions is at its highest point in 25 years.

One exception has been support for gay marriage. In May of 2008 as Obama was wrapping up the Democratic nomination, just 40 percent of Americans told Gallup's pollsters same-sex marriages should be recognized by the law as valid. This May, 50 percent said yes to the same question, the most striking shift in social attitudes during Obama's presidency. Still, more than 30 states have passed measures against it and it's frequently a losing issue at the ballot box. There are no united states on this question.

Polarization doesn't stop at politics or policy, either. It appears to be embedded in personal relationships. A pre-convention Washington Post-Kaiser Family Foundation poll found Democrats and Republicans tend to be surrounded by fellow partisans ? two-thirds of their friends and family share their party leanings.

Many of us belong to tribes tinted red or blue.

___

WHAT WE EARN

Few could have seen it coming back when Bill Clinton was scrambling to salvage his presidency from the Monica Lewinsky business, but his later years in office are starting to look like one of the economy's golden ages. Unemployment was low, the government miraculously took in what it spent and the stock market marched steadily upward, at least until the bubble burst.

Household income peaked in 1999, at $53,252 in today's dollars, and has declined since, to $49,445 in 2010. That puts households back to where they were in the mid-1990s.

But an even bigger rewind to an earlier time seems to be happening with the poor.

In July, The Associated Press found a broad consensus among economists and scholars that the official poverty rate is on track to reach its highest level in nearly half a century, erasing distinct ? if modest ? gains from the 1960s "war on poverty" that expanded the safety net with the introduction of Medicaid, Medicare and other social welfare programs.

The wealth gap between younger and older has grown into an unprecedented divide. Older people always have more net worth than younger adults on average, but now those 65 and over have 47 times more than adults under 35. It used to be only 10 times more, a quarter-century ago.

Overall, the value of goods and services produced in the country has returned to pre-recession levels, though with 5 million fewer people working. That makes the U.S. more productive and competitive. But when combined with meager income gains during that time, it also suggests we're working harder for roughly the same pay.

___

WHAT WE PAY

Housing prices have dropped by a striking 34 percent since late 2006. That's good if ? only if ? you're buying.

Tuition is up 15 percent at four-year public universities and almost 10 percent at private four-year institutions from 2008 to 2010.

Gas? It's a rollercoaster. The U.S. saw 91 cents a gallon only 13 years ago, during Clinton's presidency. The average price hit $2 in May 2004, $4 in June 2008, then plunged before that year's election, spiked and rollercoastered along, sitting now at $3.74 a gallon.

In 2008, workers paid an average of $3,354 for a year's worth of job-based health insurance, more than double their cost from nine years earlier, the Kaiser Family Foundation reported. In 2011, that average grew to $4,129. Not only did premiums rise, but many more workers were picking up the first $1,000 or more of health care costs as deductibles grew and employers shifted more health costs to employees.

___

WHO WE WERE

Norman Rockwell's America may have come and gone, if it ever existed, but the much younger nation de Tocqueville, the French philosopher, saw in his 1830s travels is still recognizable in its older age. For all the new colors, bold strokes of the past still show.

Want some age-old perspective on why Republicans fought Obama's health care law up to the Supreme Court this year? De Tocqueville wrote: "There is hardly a political question in the United States which does not sooner or later turn into a judicial one."

Both a scold and admirer, he found Americans obsessed with money, tending to "move forward by sudden impulses and short-lived efforts," quick to form agitating associations, reveling in an "always moving scene," loving change because it "seems to give birth only to miracles," and apt to rise from their stitched-from-many-nations roots to light up the world.

You'll hear lots about change if you tune into the conventions. To be seen: whether we still believe in miracles.

Much at stake for US as tensions rise in China Seas

Masataka Morita / AP

A boat from Hong Kong, center, is surrounded by Japanese Coast Guard vessels after Chinese activists landed on Uotsuri Island, one of the Senkaku or Diaoyu Islands, on Aug. 15.

By NBC News staff

Vast oil reserves, trillion-dollar trade routes, fervent nationalist sentiments, competing territorial claims and bitter histories ? the waters off the east coast of China are a sea of money and a sea of trouble.

Tensions have been rising for several years and recently hit new heights with activists landing on disputed islands, angry diplomatic exchanges and even a threat to deploy troops,?prompting fears of an armed conflict that could potentially involve the United States, China, Japan and other nations.

The South China Sea has a myriad of competing claims of ownership: China staked out most of it in 1947 but its neighbors have?never accepted it. The Spratly Islands alone are claimed by a total of five countries: China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Philippines and Vietnam.

All are eyeing oil and gas reserves thought to be so rich that the area has become dubbed "The Second Persian Gulf." Also, an estimated $5 trillion worth of trade is shipped through its waters.

In a speech last month in Cambodia,?Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton told members of the Asean group of nations ? which includes the Philippines, Vietnam and Malaysia ? that "maritime security" was one of a number of issues in the region of "central importance" to the U.S., and spoke of "transnational threats" as one area of U.S. government focus.

But perhaps the most dangerous potential flashpoint is farther north in the East China Sea. China and Japan both claim ownership of the uninhabited Senkaku Islands ??known as Diaoyu in Chinese ? with strong nationalist feelings on both sides.

Japanese nationalists land on island claimed by China

Just last week, the U.S. confirmed last week?that the islands were covered by Article 5 of its security treaty with Japan, which spells out that an armed attack against either state would prompt each to "act to meet the common danger."

'Intimidate its neighbors'
Bonnie Glaser, a senior fellow at the Center for International & Strategic Studies and a consultant to the U.S. government on East Asia, said if China decides to seize the Senkakus ??currently administered by Japan ??it would likely provoke a military confrontation.

An article in Foreign Policy magazine?on Monday even speculated on who would win the "Sino-Japanese Naval War of 2012," concluding it would end in a stalemate that would see Tokyo emerge with a political victory and potentially reverse China's progress toward world-power status "in an afternoon."

But Glaser told NBCNews.com that she doubted war would break out, partly because China is aware that if they did seize the islands, "the U.S. would be there" for its ally Japan.

"I think there could be the possibility of some miscalculation ??maybe there could be some exchange of fire, but an all-out war? No. I don't think that's on the cards," she said.

Glaser said the situation was seen as a "test case of how China will act as it emerges as a great power."

"The U.S. has an interest in trying to ensure that China does not intimidate its neighbors, that it does not use military force or other means to compel its neighbors to accept outcomes that are against their interest," she said.

"Clearly if nations like the Philippines lose confidence in the U.S. ability to serve as the principal regional guarantor, they may embark on a potentially destabilizing arms build-up or accede to the demands of China. Neither would be in the interests of the U.S.," she said.

"We do not want to set up a situation where the Chinese believe the Asia-Pacific is their backyard," she added.

'Unavoidable moment of truth'
Senator James Webb, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations East Asian and Pacific Affairs Subcommittee, wrote in The Wall Street Journal on Monday?that China had recently created a new national prefecture covering disputed islands in the South China Sea, and had announced it would deploy troops to guard them.

He said that China had "for practical purposes ? unilaterally decided to annex an area that extends eastward from the East Asian mainland as far as the Philippines, and nearly as far south as the Strait of Malacca."

An aerial view of Uotsuri Island, one of the islands known as Senkaku in Japanese and Diaoyu in Chinese, in the East China Sea.

"The U.S., China and all of East Asia have now reached an unavoidable moment of truth. Sovereignty disputes in which parties seek peaceful resolution are one thing; flagrant, belligerent acts are quite another," he added in the article.

For China's part, memories of Japan's violent invasion in the 1930s inflame nationalist sentiments.

Shi Yinhong, a leading scholar of international relations at Renmin University of China and a foreign policy adviser to China's Cabinet,?advocated?the case for "new thinking" and more rational relations with Japan in 2005, but found himself under attack from Chinese nationalists for being "too soft" on the former enemy.

"Nationalism is the number one driving force complicating the problem," he lamented, saying a "mutual hatred" existed between Chinese and Japanese nationalists.

China protests US State Department remarks on South China Sea

However, he told NBCNews.com that the nationalists in China were "not strong enough to push the government to take military action without 100 percent necessity."

"I don't think the Chinese government will take any action to occupy the Diaoyu islands," Shi said. "The governments in Beijing and Tokyo have been extraordinarily careful to prevent any direct conflict between the two armed forces and this determination is as strong as before."

Crisis for Japan?
In the South China Sea, China has set up a new military garrison and a regular "armed patrol" system to enforce its territorial claims, prompting critical reaction from the United States and some Southeast Asian countries.

But despite this, Shi said that the dispute with Japan over the Diaoyus in the East China Sea was the "potentially more dangerous" one.

Last week activists from Hong Kong, the former British colony now part of China, landed on the islands and a group of Japanese politicians then swam out to raise the Japanese flag. That sparked protests in the southern Chinese city of Shenzen as well as in several other cities.

Kyodo via Reuters

Members of a Japanese nationalist group raise Japanese flags as they land on Uotsuri island, part of the disputed islands in the East China Sea, on Aug. 19.

One of the Japanese protesters, Eiji Kosaka, a local politician from Tokyo's Arakawa District, said it was "only natural" for him to protest, even though he and his fellow demonstrators were denied permission to land on the island by the Japanese authorities.

"Senkaku Islands of Ishigaki City, Okinawa, is on the verge of a crisis. Along with 10 other comrades, we felt the need to declare that this is Japanese territory," Kosaka said.

Another protester, Satoru Mizushima, said that they had carried out the protest "to shed light on the fact that the Japanese government has abandoned its duty to defend people's lives and property."

PhotoBlog: Japan arrests activists on disputed island

Japan is also involved in disputes with Russia over the Southern Kuril islands and with South Korea over the Dokdo Islands, which have been under South Korean administrative control since 1952.

During the London Olympics, a member of South Korea's men's soccer team held up a sign handed to him by a fan proclaiming "Dokdo is our territory."

PhotoBlog: South Korean coastguard clashes with armada of Chinese fishing boats

Earlier this month, South Korean President Lee Myungbak made a surprise visit to the island -- a first by a Korean president -- prompting Tokyo to take a more active role in staking Japan's claim. For the first time in over 50 years, Japan has decided to take its case to the International Court of Justice in Hague.

'What is ours is ours'
Japan is not the only U.S. ally in the region feeling the pressure as China becomes more powerful.

Henry Bensurto Jr., head of the Commission on Maritime and Ocean Affairs under the Philippines' Department of Foreign Affairs, told NBCNews.com?that the Philippines?had tried to resolve the dispute with China over the South China Sea "in a quiet way" for a long time.

"But as we do that nice diplomacy, we are slowly losing our own territory," he said. "It's not good to have a picture of a strong country overpowering the small country. That is not an acceptable scenario."

"I think this issue is going to be there for a long time, I don't think there's a thought that it's going to be solved overnight. We're working for the long haul," he added.

A report in July by the International Crisis Group?said, "At least five significant skirmishes were reported within the first five months of 2011, although the Philippines' lack of modern surveillance equipment made it difficult to substantiate accusations."

Vietnamese navy personnel patrol the Truong Sa or Spratly Islands in this April 13, 2010 file photo.

"In response, the Aquino government began to ratchet up diplomatic efforts, accelerate military procurement and refer to the South China Sea as the 'West Philippine Sea' in all official communications," the report said. "The president declared in July 2011 that 'what is ours is ours' in reference to Reed Bank [one of the disputed areas]."

The Socialist Republic of Vietnam might be expected to have better relations with China, but disputes over territory have raised similar tensions.

In 1988 the two countries fought over disputed islands, resulting in China occupying the Paracel Islands. According to the International Crisis Group report, this "led many Vietnamese to believe that China would not hesitate to use force again to settle sovereignty disputes."

"Nationalist sentiments in Vietnam run particularly high in its disputes with China and put pressure on the government to stand up to Beijing," the report said. "The bitter nature of the disputes has led observers to surmise that Vietnam would not back down from a military confrontation with China, despite China's overwhelming military capabilities, if only to raise the cost for Beijing."

Nguyen Lan Thang / Reuters, file

Protesters hold banners while chanting slogans on a street in Hanoi on July 22, during a protest against China's moves to strengthen its claim on disputed islands in the South China Sea.

To many, the situation appears deadlocked, with China arguing there should be one-to-one talks with Vietnam and other neighbor states, while they push for negotiations involving all parties.

"It's kind of a pessimistic situation but what can we hope for??" Nhuyen Thi Lan Anh, deputy director of the Center for South China Sea Studies at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, told NBCNews.com.

"At least we need rules of the game. If no one knows the rules of the game, we can get out of control, and in the end of course peace and stability will be hampered."

NBC News' Eric Baculinao in Beijing, Arata Yamamoto in Tokyo, Ploy Bunluesilp and Ian Johnston contributed to this report.

Cooper Barton, Oklahoma Student In Trouble For Wearing Michigan T-Shirt, Gets Gifts, Invitation To Game

The 5-year-old kindergarten student who was told to turn his University of Michigan T-shirt inside out will be receiving a hero's welcome at an upcoming Michigan football game.

Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon called Cooper Barton and his family Wednesday, inviting them to the UM-UMass game Sept. 15 in Ann Arbor, Mich., all expenses paid. He's also planning to introduce Cooper to the 109,000-plus crowd at Michigan Stadium, and is sending the boy some spirited gifts.

"This is, as you will see, is a Michigan football T-shirt that we're going to send to Cooper," Brandon said at a press conference Wednesday while holding up a shirt made specially for the boy. "But what I want you to understand about this T-shirt is when you turn it inside-out, you get another Michigan T-shirt."

The kindergartner was told to turn his shirt inside-out at school last week because it violated Oklahoma City Public Schools' dress code, which bars students from wearing "clothing bearing the names or emblems of all professional and collegiate athletic teams (with the exception of Oklahoma colleges and universities)."

The policy was written in 2005 as part of an effort to curb gang activity. District officials have expressed their intent to review the policy to determine if changes should be made.

Since news of the incident spread, Cooper's family has received widespread support that Cooper's parents say is "amazing," the Detroit Free Press reports. But it's not just limited to UM, and the Bartons say they're "thrilled."

"Even the Ohio State fans, if you can believe that, have been supportive and sent us nice messages," Cooper's mother Shannon Barton told News9.

News 9 was with the family during Brandon's surprise call. Watch the station's report above and the athletic director's press conference below.
