(AP) ? For Justin Verlander, $180 million was enough. No need to wait two seasons, become a free agent and find out how much baseball's biggest spenders would offer.

"I wondered what it would be like to test free agency, but the pull of Detroit was too much," the Tigers' ace said Friday after agreeing to a seven-year contract, the richest deal for a pitcher in baseball history. "Once spring training started I knew I wanted to stay."

Verlander's deal broke the record for pitchers set just a month earlier when Seattle's Felix Hernandez agreed to a $175 million, seven-year contract.

"It's a very exciting day," Tigers President Dave Dombrowski said. "It's a big day for us. He's as fine a pitcher as there is in baseball. His record speaks for itself. He can be one of the greatest, if not the greatest pitcher in Tiger history."

The 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young Award winner had been signed through 2014 under an $80 million, five-year contract paying him $20 million in each of the next two seasons.

The new deal keeps those salaries and adds $140 million in guaranteed money: $28 million each season from 2015-19. It includes a $22 million option for 2020 that would become guaranteed if he finishes among the top five in 2019 Cy Young voting. The deal could be worth $202 million over eight seasons.

"The city of Detroit is committed to winning," he said. "I'm so excited to be playing in Detroit. I was never shy about saying I wanted to stay in Detroit. It's tough to put into words how much I love Detroit. We have the best fans in baseball."

Considered an elite pitcher since winning the 2006 AL Rookie of the Year award, the 30-year-old right-hander is 124-65 with a 3.40 ERA in eight major league seasons with two no-hitters. He was 24-5 two years ago, becoming the first starting pitcher to sweep Cy Young and MVP since Boston's Roger Clemens in 1986.

Verlander also has compiled a 19-win season and two each of 18 and 17. He led the big leagues in strikeouts and innings in 2009, 2011 and 2012.

"He is never going to be content," Dombrowski said. "He wants a World Series, and he wants the Hall of Fame."

Verlander's teammates were pleased for their star pitcher.

"First, he deserves it because it means a lot for all of us," pitcher Max Scherzer said. "From now on, every time we go out to dinner, I am not even going to make a token effort to pull out my credit card. Every dinner this year is on him."

'We have cried enough'

President Barack Obama spoke at the White House with rows of grieving mothers behind him and publicly implored Congress to pass gun reform legislation 100 days after the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting in Newtown, Conn.

"If we are serious, we will do it," Obama said, Vice President Joe Biden at his side. "We have cried enough. We have known enough heartbreak. Now, it?s time to turn that heartbreak into something real."

As the mothers of the children killed by gun violence wiped away tears, the president went on to urge the passage of background checks for gun buyers, and for loopholes to be closed for buyers who turn around and sell guns to criminals. He said 90 percent of Americans support background checks, as well as 80 percent of gun owners and 80 percent of Republicans.

The president also implored Americans to talk to their representatives in Congress if their lawmakers oppose the measures. "None of these ideas should be controversial,? Obama said.

Perhaps the most controversial proposed gun reform legislation, an assault weapons ban, was absent from the president's remarks Thursday.

Senate Democrats working on gun reform legislation recently announced that they would drop an assault weapons ban from an overall package of reform measures and put it to a separate vote as an amendment. That action is designed to boost the chances a reform package will pass, as it's expected that the ban is too unpalatable for some members, especially Democrats in gun rights states and the multitude of Republican opponents.

On Wednesday, the White House cast a positive spin on that decision, suggesting that offering the ban up as an amendment still forces lawmakers to choose sides on the issue, even if it doesn't win passage.

"I can't stand here and guarantee that it?s going to pass," White House principal deputy press secretary Josh Earnest said at Wednesday's press briefing, "but it is a question that 100 senators are going to ask themselves when they wake up in the morning and look themselves in the mirror about whether or not they are going to?about which side they're going to be on when it comes to voting on a ban on military-style assault weapons." He added that the president will continue to advocate for the ban.

Democrats in Congress concede separating the ban from the overall package is the best way forward.

"We want to come out with the best, the boldest common denominator that we can get," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said at a news conference on Wednesday when asked about the decision to separate out an assault weapons ban.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has stated plans to introduce a gun reform bill next month.

In addition to the president's talk, activities related to gun reform are taking place across the country Thursday, a day gun reform advocates have marked the "National Day to Demand Action" to end gun violence.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg?s anti-gun group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, released two television ads Thursday featuring family members of those killed in Newtown.

Court documents released Thursday revealed, among other things, that police investigating the Sandy Hook massacre seized Samurai swords, as well as a massive amount of ammunitions, and books on guns and mental health from the home of gunman Adam Lanza.

WhaleShark Media changes name, buys Dutch coupon company

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Online coupon company WhaleShark Media said it was changing its name to RetailMeNot and acquiring the leading online coupon site in Holland, Actiepagina.nl.

The acquisition marks RetailMeNot's fourth in Europe, in addition to online-coupon companies VoucherCodes in the United Kingdom; Poulpeo in France; and Deals.com in Germany.

The company did not disclose the dollar amount of the latest deal, but a person familiar with the matter said Actiepagina cost under $10 million.

Bankers consider RetailMeNot a likely initial public offering candidate for late 2013.

Unlike companies like Groupon, known for working with small companies to provide one-off discounts, RetailMeNot works with larger companies to create online coupons that give smaller discounts, but more regularly. The model is closer to the traditional clipped coupon.

Rand Paul filibuster fallout: Are Democrats his real allies?

Who are Rand Paul?s real allies? That?s a question D.C. political types have been chewing over since the GOP senator from Kentucky's filibuster about his objections to the Obama administration?s drone policies last week.

In particular, Senator Paul wanted clarification about whether the White House thinks it has the power to target with a drone a US citizen within the territorial US who is not engaged in combat. (?No?, said Attorney General Eric Holder in a letter responding to Paul?s public query.) That?s a question about civil liberties that hits the sweet spot where the progressive left wing and the libertarian right meet.

The US ideological spectrum isn?t always a line. Sometimes it?s a circle. Thus Paul was hailed by one of the Tea Party?s favorite new lawmakers, conservative Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, and liberal talk show host Rachel Maddow alike.

RECOMMENDED: So you think you know Congress? Take our quiz.

Yet only one Democrat, Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon, stood to help Paul during his hours of talking. All his other helpmeets were GOP, including many who support an expansive definition of executive authority when it comes to national security. What explains that?

In a word, partisanship, according to Georgetown University assistant professor of political science Hans Noel.

The proximate issue on the floor was the Obama administration?s nomination of counterterror adviser John Brennan to be director of the CIA.

Want your top political issues explained? Get customized DC Decoder updates.

?Liberals, especially those elected to office, have little to gain from blocking the president?s choice. Conservatives, even those who might have tolerated a drone program run by a conservative, have much to gain,? wrote Mr. Noel on the Mischiefs of Faction political science blog.

That does not mean that ?partisanship? and ?ideology? are synonyms, however. The antiwar left has been quiet since President Obama was elected but it still exists. The most common GOP criticism of Mr. Obama?s antiterror policies is that he is too soft, not too aggressive.

?It is convenient to think about ideology as a single liberal-to-conservative dimension.... But we would do better to understand the true variety within ideology more than we do. The drone program is just the sort of case that illuminates that variety,? writes Noel.

That said, is it possible that Paul could change the GOP?s mind on this issue? In other words, might the partisanship he sparked alter the very nature of Republican ideology?

Well, maybe. Over at The New York Times opinion page the conservative-leaning Ross Douthat has been arguing that the Paul filibuster presents an opportunity to widen the Republican conversation on national security.

That may be what Paul was really after last week.

?Anyone who listened (and listened, and listened) to his remarks, and put them in the context of his recent speeches and votes and bridge-building, recognized that he was after something bigger: a reorientation of conservative foreign policy thinking away from hair-trigger hawkishness and absolute deference to executive power,? Douthat writes.

It?s possible that Paul has at least broadened the spectrum of permissible GOP national-security opinions. As the conservative Jennifer Rubin writes at her conservative Right Turn Washington Post blog, traditional GOP hawks such as Sen. John McCain have tried to dismiss Paul as someone who does not defend US interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan and a generally interventionist American foreign policy. But that may misread the opinions of US society at large.

?Paul?s ideological opponents on the right only made him appear bigger and more attractive by their cluelessness as to the war weariness and privacy and civil libertarian concerns to which some have rallied,? writes Rubin.

Cyber security a challenge to U.S.-China ties: White House aide

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Cyber security has become a growing challenge to the economic relationship between China and the United States and Beijing should recognize the scope of the problem, White House national security adviser Tom Donilon said on Monday.

U.S. businesses have been increasingly concerned about the targeted theft of confidential business information and proprietary technologies through cyber intrusions emanating from China, Donilon said in a speech to The Asia Society.

"The international community cannot afford to tolerate such activity from any country," he said, noting that President Barack Obama had vowed in his State of the Union speech last month to protect the U.S. economy against cyber threats.

Donilon's comments were among the most direct by a senior U.S. official, citing China by name as the source of cyber threats, although he did so by referring to the concerns of U.S. businesses rather than the government.

Still, the remarks indicated that Washington has decided to be more public in its condemnation of China for cyber attacks on U.S. companies and rampant cyber espionage.

Donilon said from Obama on down, concern over cyber attacks had become a "key point of concern and discussion" with China at all levels of the two governments. He said the United states would do everything in its power to protect national networks, critical infrastructure and public and private sector property.

He spelled out three requests for China, saying Beijing should recognize the urgency and scope of the problem and the risk it poses to international trade as well as the reputation of Chinese industry and to overall U.S.-China relations.

"Second, Beijing should take serious steps to investigate and put a stop to these activities," Donilon said. "Finally, we need China to engage with us in a constructive direct dialogue to establish acceptable norms of behavior in cyberspace."

Last month, a private U.S. computer security company issued a study accusing a secretive Chinese military unit of being behind a series of hacking attacks on a wide range of American industries.

China has denied the accusations and said it is one of the biggest victims of cyber assaults.

Jimi Hendrix's 'People, Hell and Angels': Posthumous Album Set For A Strong Debut

"People, Hell and Angels," a new posthumous album from music legend Jimi Hendrix, is set to be the deceased rocker's biggest album since his 1968 smash hit, "Electric Ladyland."

While "Electric Ladyland" hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200, "People, Hell and Angels" is set to debut at No. 2.

The 12-track "People, Hell and Angels" was produced by Eddie Kramer, Hendrix's former sound manager. The album features tracks that were recorded to serve as a follow-up to "Electric Ladyland," including the recently released single, "Somewhere."

Billboard reports that "People, Hell and Angels" is on track to sell 70,000 copies. The rock album will likely come in second to Luke Bryan's latest album, "Spring Break... Here to Party," which is projected to take the No. 1 spot.

Hendrix and Bryan will be joined at the top of Billboard's chart by Josh Groban, Bruno Mars, and Tim McGraw, among others.

House fire kills five children and two adults in rural Kentucky

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (Reuters) - Five children and two adults died in a house fire in rural Knox County, Kentucky, on Saturday, in a blaze that was reported by a neighbor who saw smoke but was unable to reach the home's occupants, police said.

The two adults who died lived in the house with their three children, said Kentucky State Police Sergeant Jackie Pickrell. The other two children were visiting the home,

Investigators are seeking to find the cause of the fire at the brick and timber home in Gray, a small community near Corbin, Kentucky, 130 miles southeast of Louisville.

"A neighbor had noticed the smoke and responded and tried to get them out," Pickrell said.

But the seven people inside the home are believed to have already died when the neighbor responded. Investigators suspect they succumbed to smoke inhalation, although the cause of death will be determined at an autopsy.

Protesters in Tokyo demand end to nuclear power

TOKYO (AP) ? Thousands of people rallied in a Tokyo park Saturday, demanding an end to atomic power and vowing never to give up the fight, despite two years of little change after the nuclear disaster in northeastern Japan.

Gathering two days ahead of the second anniversary of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that sent the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant into multiple meltdowns, demonstrators said they would never forget the world's worst nuclear catastrophe since Chernobyl, and expressed alarm over the government's eagerness to restart reactors.

"I can't see what lies ahead. It looks hopeless, but if I give up now, it's over," said Akihiro Nakata, a 47-year-old owner of a construction company, who had a drum slung around his shoulder. "I'd rather die moving forward."

Only two of Japan's 50 working nuclear reactors have been put back online since the disaster, partly because of continuous protests like Saturday's, the first time such demonstrations have popped up in this nation since the 1960s movement against the Vietnam War.

People have thronged Tokyo parks on national holidays, and have gathered outside the parliament building every Friday evening. The demonstrations have drawn people previously unseen at political rallies, such as commuter "salarymen" and housewives. Organizers said Saturday's demonstration drew 13,000 people.

Two years after the disaster, 160,000 people have left their homes around the plant, entire sections of nearby communities are still ghost towns, and fears grow about cancer and other sicknesses the spewing radiation might bring.

But the new prime minister elected late last year, Shinzo Abe, hailing from a conservative party that fostered the pro-nuclear policies of modernizing Japan, wants to restart the reactors, and maybe even build new ones.

The protesters said they were shocked by how the government was ignoring them.

"I am going to fight against those who act as though Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Fukushima never happened," Nobel Prize-winning writer Kenzaburo Oe told the crowd, referring to the atomic bombings preceding the end of World War II. "I am going to fight to prevent any more reactors from being restarted."

The demonstrators applauded, waving signs and lanterns that read, "Let's save the children" and "No nukes." Some were handing out leaflets, pleading to save animals abandoned in the no-go zone.

Kazuko Nihei, 36, was selling trinkets and soap that mothers, like her, who had fled Fukushima had made, hoping to raise funds for children's health check-ups and their new lives in Tokyo.

"When the government talks about recovery, they are talking about infrastructure. When we talk about recovery, we are talking about the future of our children," she said.

Another big Tokyo rally was planned for Sunday. A concert Saturday evening was to feature Oscar and Grammy-winning musician Ryuichi Sakamoto, one of the most vocal opponents of nuclear power. Commemorative services will be held Monday throughout the nation to remember the nearly 19,000 people who died in the disaster.

Less under the spotlight Monday will be a class-action lawsuit being filed against the government and Tokyo Electric Power Co., the utility that operates Fukushima Dai-ichi, demanding all land, the natural environment and homes be restored to their state before March 11, 2011.

The lawsuit in Fukushima District Court is unusual in drawing people from all walks of life, including farmers, fishermen and housewives, because of the wording of the damage demand.

It has drawn 800 plaintiffs so far, a remarkable number in a conformist culture that frowns upon any challenge to the status quo, especially lawsuits. That number may grow as people join the lawsuit in coming months. A verdict is not expected for more than a year.

"We can't believe the government is thinking about restarting the reactors after the horrendous damage and human pain the accident has caused," Izutaro Managi, one of the lawyers, said by telephone. "It is tantamount to victimizing the victims one more time."

Kazuko Ishige, a 66-year-old apartment manager who was at the rally with a friend from Fukushima, said she was sick of the government's lies about the safety of nuclear plants.

"I am really angry," she said. "I am going to have to keep at it until I die."

AF Removes RPA Airstrike Number From Summary

www.airforcetimes.com:

As scrutiny and debate over the use of remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) by the American military increased last month, the Air Force reversed a policy of sharing the number of airstrikes launched from RPAs in Afghanistan and quietly scrubbed those statistics from previous releases kept on their website.

The Most Skipped Step on the Journey | Inner Works Publishing

by Suzanne E. Harril

We evolve daily as we explore our life and build awareness, getting to know ourselves better, face our fears, change habits, and make conscious choices to better our lives. We do many things to evolve: read self-help books, gathering information to improve our lives; talk to friends about our problems, receiving support to solve them; or go to a group or individual psychotherapy, gathering insights from others outside of our frame of reference. Some of us, on the fast track, do all of the above and more.

For many, there comes a time when change slows down and it is difficult to progress at the same fast clip we?ve been accustomed to while changing patterns, beliefs, and behaviors.

One of the most skipped steps in the healing process is learning to love yourself. It requires recognizing and addressing the negative feelings you have about yourself. If you want to improve the quality of your life, you, at some point, must improve how your feel about yourself. Why? Because self-esteem, how warm and loving your feel about yourself, is the foundation of your life.

Read the following paragraph and notice the degree of truth for you. You may feel the statements are true, somewhat true, or false. If they are not true for you, begin the healing process by saying these affirmations often to yourself. This will repattern your inner belief structure over time to give you a different experience of life.

I am a valuable, worthwhile person. I deserve love, respect, good relationships, health, and work that uses my abilities. I am capable of living peacefully with others, able to communicate well, to problem-solve, and to resolve conflict. I forgive myself for not being perfect and learn from my mistakes. As I take positive risks to change within, I notice my outer world changes. I enjoy my life, feel good, and I love the person that I am.

Take a moment to reflect and answer the following questions. How does this paragraph of positive statements make you feel? What are some things that affect or have affected your feelings of self-worth both positively and negatively? Where in your life do you notice feelings of low self-esteem? high self-esteem?

When you do not feel worthy of love, support, help, friendship, and good relationships, to name a few, it sabotages your progress into being a fully functioning adult. Happiness, self-empowerment, satisfaction in work, good relationships, and success are all built on a foundation of healthy self-esteem.

No matter what your challenges are in life, know that you are a valuable, worthwhile human being who deserves love, respect, and happiness. If living your life has been based on false assumptions, it may now be time to change your beliefs about yourself to a new level of truth. Then you can experience different results in your life, such as inner peace and self-acceptance. You may, for example, have struggled with depression or a physical illness and forgotten that who you are, is not your illness. So many of us were taught to base our self-esteem on what we do and not who we are.

Self-esteem is a term that gets bandied around a lot these days. The downside is that self-esteem has become a clich?, an easy label, and therefore easy to ignore. The upside is that almost everyone knows the meaning and importance of self-esteem and that building inner resources improves such things as outer confidence.

Let us look at high self-esteem and low self-esteem so we can get a better understanding of where we are headed and what gets in our way.

High self-esteem is a quiet, comfortable feeling of total acceptance and love for yourself ? as you are. It is respecting and valuing yourself as a worthwhile human being, honestly seeing your good and not-so-good qualities, and taking care of and nurturing yourself so you can become all that you are capable of being. High self-esteem is characterized by congruence between inner states (beliefs, feelings, attitudes) and outer states (behavior, relationships, health). When you know and love yourself, you automatically reflect this to others. (The way you treat others is how you treat yourself).

Signs of High Self-Esteem:

  • Having an internal locus of control; getting ?okayness? from within, not from others.
  • Taking care of yourself ? physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.
  • Maintaining a balance between extremes of thought, feeling, and behavior; when out-of-balance, taking action to correct.
  • Learning from mistakes and being able to say, ?I made a mistake, I?m sorry.?
  • Managing your life responsibly.
  • Honoring individual differences among people.
  • Listening to other points of view.
  • Taking responsibility for your own perceptions and reactions; not projecting onto others.
  • Having the ability to listen to your wise inner self (your intuition), and to act on this guidance.
  • Demonstrating self-respect, self-confidence, and self-acceptance.
  • Knowing your own strengths and weaknesses.
  • Choosing continuous self-improvement and taking positive risks.
  • Balancing being and doing.
  • Feeling warm and loving towards yourself.
  • Giving and receiving love easily, with no strings attached.

In twenty years as a counselor, I?ve repeatedly witnessed the emotional turmoil, spiritual paralysis, and personal tragedy that can come from deep-seated problems with self-esteem. People with low self-esteem present themselves to the world in a variety of ways. I?ve learned to recognize the signs. Among the most common are extremes in thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

Some people with low self-esteem are overachievers who believe that a high IQ, physical beauty, winning at sports, or being Number One assures emotional well-being. They are often motivated by feelings of inferiority that propel them to seek validation of worth (their own and others) in outer manifestations, like money, power and praise. Others make a practice of devoting all of their time and energy to family and friends and none to themselves. Often they are ?giving? for the wrong reasons, with hidden agendas and expectations. Still others believe that they can only earn love by doing something. They evaluate their worthiness based on what they do, not on who they are. Finally, many base their self-worth on the opinions of other people or on outside indicators, much like the erratic swings of the stock market.

Signs of Low Self-Esteem

  • Self-blame, self-criticism, or constantly putting others down through guilt, blame, shame, or faultfinding.
  • Over- or under-achieving, eating, working, doing, etc.
  • Playing the victim, rationalizing that outside circumstances are the cause of your problems.
  • Not taking responsibility for your own life, turning power over to another to make decisions for you, then feeling victimized if the results are not to your liking.
  • Taking undo responsibility for the lives of others; dominating and making decisions for them.
  • Fear of change and reluctance to take risks, or too much change, taking dangerous, unwise risks.
  • Constant negativity or being so optimistic that reality is denied.
  • Reacting to others with extreme emotion or no emotion.
  • Boastful, overbearing behavior around others, or inability to maintain integrity during interactions.
  • Demanding to be ?right,? needing to have agreement or have your own way most of the time, or constantly acquiescing to the will and opinions of others.
  • Constantly comparing yourself to others, and thereby feeling inferior or superior.
  • Black-white, either-or thinking; e.g., believing that a person is either good or bad based on rigid standards of good and bad behavior.
  • Having pervasive, deep-seated feelings of fear, terror, or panic.
  • Speaking with lots of ?shoulds,? ?oughts,? ?could-haves,? and ?yes-buts.?
  • Interpreting the hurtful words or actions of others as proof of your unworthiness.

Since self-esteem is the foundation of your life, how do you proceed if it is not strong? If you do not like parts of your life, you have the power to rebuild that foundation. Begin with your beliefs about yourself; update all that are false or that fail to support your growth and highest good. Remember, you alone have the power to change your inner world. As you gradually accept the truth of these new beliefs, your feelings about yourself will improve. This in turn will affect your actions, accomplishments, and relationships and you will experience more love, joy, abundance, and satisfaction in life. Yes, you will still have your challenges in life, we all do; however, you will view them differently.

I would like to mention here the importance of accepting, at some level, that you are of value because God, or Life (use your own spiritual language) has called you into creation. The mere fact that you were born affirms that you are important, needed, and loved for who you are, no matter what you have been told or what you think.

It is helpful to summarize by using an acorn analogy to help you love and accept yourself. You are like an acorn that at each stage of its growth cycle does its best to become a giant oak tree. The acorn can only grow to the degree that it is nurtured by sunlight, rainwater, and nutrients from the soil. But, even if its early life is less than ideal, its growth will accelerate at any time proper nutrients become available. You, too, have done the best you can under the unique conditions that have shaped your life thus far. With additional nurturing, self-awareness, and self-acceptance ? just watch yourself grow!

PFT: Moore staying in Miami? |? $8 million reasons

Matt HasselbeckAP

Add Titans backup quarterback Matt Hasselbeck to the pay-cut-or-be-cut club, and at least the veteran passer understands exactly what?s going on.

Hasselbeck said his agent and the Titans are still talking about what his contract will look like, understanding it might not necessarily be the $5.5 million on base salary he stands to collect now. If they can?t agree, he figures he?ll have to look elsewhere.

?Well, yeah, if we can?t come to an agreement, I guess that?s what they?d have to do. That?s just how it goes,? Hasselbeck told John Glennon of the Tennesseean. ?Right now I?m working out hard, getting prepared and ready, trying to have the best year I can. Again, I?m really hopeful that it?s here, but I understand that some things are more out of your control.?

Unlike when he walked in the door two years ago, he?s entrenched as the backup behind Jake Locker, and the Titans are leaning toward the compensation matching that status.

?I believe in what we?re doing. I believe in [general manager] Ruston Webster and [coach] Mike Munchak. I believe in my teammates like Jake,? Hasselbeck said. ?But , . . . anything can happen. Surprises come. We?ll see. I don?t know. Some of it is out of my hands, and some of it is in my hands.

?I?m really wanting to be part of something special, part of something good, something I can be proud of and things like that will far outweigh salary or whatever. My feelings for wanting to stay haven?t changed. My feelings for how easy it?s been for us to plug into this community in Nashville haven?t changed.?

While he?s not going to play for free, Hasselbeck?s approach to this makes it more likely a deal gets worked out that keeps him making a living wage, while the team re-adjusts the books to reflect his status on the depth chart.

BlackBerry Community Wants Marquee Apps So Bad It?s Porting Them DIY-Style ? And BlackBerry Doesn?t Approve

bb10appsBlackBerry's platform has had some big name additions in the past couple of days, but unfortunately both came via sideloaded Android apps, likely created by the community using BlackBerry developer tools and the APKs of the Android apps in question. BlackBerry has made it very easy for any developer to port their Android titles to BB10 in around five to ten minutes, but that means it's easy for anyone motivated enough to do so as well.

Gene identified that causes obesity in mice: Deleting gene eliminates obesity, could work for humans

Mar. 5, 2013 ? Researchers have discovered that deleting a specific gene in mice prevents them from becoming obese even on a high fat diet, a finding they believe may be replicated in humans.

"When fed a diet that induces obesity these mice don't get fat," said Prof. James McManaman, Ph.D., lead author of the study and vice-chairman of research for Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. "It may be possible to duplicate this in humans using existing technology that targets this specific gene."

The two-year study, funded by the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, was published last month in the Journal of Lipid Research.

The research team created a strain of mice without the Plin2 gene which produces a protein that regulates fat storage and metabolism. They immediately found that the mice were resistant to obesity.

Usually, mice fed a high fat diet will eat voraciously, yet these showed an unusual restraint. Not only did they eat less, they were more active.

Their fat cells were also 20 percent smaller than typical mice and did not show the kind of inflammation usually associated with obesity, the study said. Obesity-associated fatty liver disease, common in obese humans and rodents, was absent in the mice without the Plin2 gene.

"The mice were healthier," McManaman said. "They had lower triglyceride levels, they were more insulin-sensitive, they had no incidents of fatty liver disease and there was less inflammation in the fat cells."

The absence of the gene may cause fat to be metabolized faster, he said.

"Now we want to know why this works physiologically," McManaman said. "We want to better understand how this affects food consumption."

According to the study, understanding how Plin2 is involved in the control of energy balance will provide new insights into "the mechanisms by which nutrition overload is detected, and how individuals adapt to, or fail to adapt to, dietary challenges."

The consequences for people are highly significant since they also possess the Plin2 gene.

"It could mean that we have finally discovered a way to disrupt obesity in humans," he said. "That would be a major breakthrough."

Police officer's son, 4, shoots and kills himself

The 4-year-old son of a Michigan sheriff's deputy accidentally shot and killed himself at the family's home. The deputy had just left for work when it happened. WILX's Anthony Sabella reports.

By Miranda Leitsinger, Staff Writer, NBC News

The four-year-old boy of a sheriff?s deputy in northern Michigan accidentally shot and killed himself with a handgun at the family?s home over the weekend, state police said Monday.

Authorities believe Michael Easter was playing with the firearm when he shot himself one time on Saturday in Liberty Township, said First Lt. Michael Krumm of the state police. Police have sent evidence to a forensic lab for analysis but don?t think there was any criminal intent at play.

?At this point there is nothing that?s leading us to believe that this is anything more than a tragic accident,? Krumm said.

The handgun was believed to be registered to the boy?s father, Mark Easter, Krumm said, adding that he had yet to receive confirmation. But it was not Easter?s service weapon, he said.

Easter was on his way to work when his wife called and told him what happened, Jackson County Sheriff Steve Rand told mlive.com. The boy was pronounced dead at a local medical center.

?This just serves as a reminder that we need to be vigilant when it comes to keeping our children safe,? Rand said.

Cammy Rose, the cousin of Easter?s wife, told NBC affiliate wilx.com: ?Mark's a good guy. I know this wasn't intentional."

"My heart is broken for my cousin," she said. "He was definitely taken from this world too early."

A week ago, a 4-year-old Houston boy fatally shot himself with his father's stolen handgun while his dad slept.?

Fermat's Last Theorem and more can be proved more simply

Mar. 4, 2013 ? Fermat's Last Theorem -- the idea that a certain simple equation had no solutions -- went unsolved for nearly 350 years until Oxford mathematician Andrew Wiles created a proof in 1995. Now, Case Western Reserve University's Colin McLarty has shown the theorem can be proved more simply.

The theorem is called Pierre de Fermat's last because, of his many conjectures, it was the last and longest to be unverified.

In 1630, Fermat wrote in the margin of an old Greek mathematics book that he could demonstrate that no integers (whole numbers) can make the equation xn + yn = zn true if n is greater than 2.

He also wrote that he didn't have space in the margin to show the proof. Whether Fermat could prove his theorem or not is up to debate, but the problem became the most famous in mathematics. Generation after generation of mathematicians tried and failed to find a proof.

So, when Wiles broke through in 1995, "It was just shocking to a lot of us that it could be proved," McLarty, said. "And we thought, 'Now what?' There was no new most famous problem."

McLarty is a Case Western Reserve philosophy professor who specializes in logic and earned his undergraduate degree in mathematics. He hasn't developed a proof for Fermat, but has shown that the theorem can be proved with much less set theory than Wiles used.

Wiles relied on his own deep insight into numbers and works of others -- including Alexander Grothendieck -- to devise his 110-page proof and subsequent corrections.

Grothendieck revolutionized numbers theory, rebuilding algebraic geometry in the 1960s and 1970s. He used strong assumptions to support abstract ideas, including the idea of the existence of a universe of sets so large that standard set theory cannot prove they exist. Standard set theory is composed of the most commonly used principles, or axioms, that mathematicians use.

McLarty calls Grothendieck's work "a toolkit," and showed, at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Diego in January, that only a small portion is needed to prove Fermat's Last Theorem.

"Most number theorists are like race car drivers. They get the best out of the car but they don't build the whole car," McLarty said. "Grothendieck created a toolkit to build cars from scratch."

"Where Grothendieck used strong set theory I've shown he could do with only a fraction of it," McLarty said. "I use finite-order arithmetic, where all sets are built from numbers in just a few steps.

"You don't need sets of sets of numbers, which Grothendieck used in his toolkit and Andrew Wiles used to prove the theorem in the 90s."

McLarty showed that all of Grothendieck's ideas, even the most abstract, can be justified using very little set theory -- much less than standard set theory. Specifically, they can be justified using "finite order arithmetic." This uses numbers and sets of numbers and set of those and so on, but much less than standard set theory.

"I appreciate the wholeness of the foundation Grothedieck created," McLarty said. " I want to take the whole thing and make it more usable to practicing mathematicians."

Mathematician Harvey Friedman, who famously earned his undergraduate, master's and PhD from MIT in three years and began teaching at Stanford University at age 18, calls the work a "clarifying first step," ScienceNews reported. Friedman, now an emeritus mathematics professor at Ohio State University, calls for McLarty's work to be extended to see if the theorem can be proved by numbers alone, with no sets involved.

"Fermat's Last Theorem is just about numbers, so it seems like we ought to be able to prove it by just talking about numbers," McLarty said. "I believe that can be done, but it will require many new insights into numbers. It will be very hard. Harvey sees my work as a preliminary step to that, and I agree it is."

McLarty will talk more about that specific result at the Association for Symbolic Logic North American Annual Meeting in Waterloo, Ontario, May 8-11.

SEFFNER, Fla. ? A? man who jumped into a chasm and tried in vain to his brother from a catastrophic sinkhole said Monday he was frustrated that authorities haven?t done more to retrieve the body ? even as another sinkhole opened up just a couple of miles away.

?They said it was dangerous, but you see this heavy equipment, you see that?? Jeremy Bush, choking back tears, asked reporters. ?The house is still standing. The only reason the house fell is because they put the machines on it.?

He said that his parents are ?going through hell right now.?

The first sinkhole opened last Thursday night and engulfed Jeff Bush, 36, who was in his bedroom. Jeremy Bush jumped in to save him and had to be rescued himself by sheriff?s deputies.

Authorities have said that the cavity is so unstable that nearby houses are unsafe, and that it is too dangerous to send a crew to recover the body.

On Monday, the long arm of an excavator parked in the street dug carefully through the remains of the house. Once crews finish demolishing the structure, authorities can get a better look at the hole and figure out how to stabilize and fill it.

William Puz, a spokesman for Hillsborough County, said a crew would try later Monday to retrieve a china cabinet that was valuable to the family. The crew planned either to wrap the cabinet and lift it out or to send a worker in a bucket to save individual pieces.

He said the crew hoped to finish demolition by the end of the day.

Working gingerly, heavy equipment began pulling apart the house over the weekend, scooping precious belongings onto the lawn. A Bible, family photos, a jewelry box and a pink teddy bear were among the items saved.

Workers penetrated the walls leading to the bedroom on Monday and got their first look at the sinkhole, which engineers estimate is 30 feet wide and 60 feet deep.

Jeff Bush lived in the house, outside Tampa, with his girlfriend, their 2-year-old daughter and two other people. The others in the house were unharmed.

Jeremy Bush said that his mother was waking up every hour and crying in bed.

?No one ever wants to bury their kid before they go,? he said.

Meanwhile, county officials received more bad news late Monday afternoon as another sinkhole was discovered less than two miles away, NBC?s WFLA reported.

The 10-feet deep sinkhole is located behind a home and officials say thus far there have been no injuries or structural damage.??
