Chicago Auto Show: The Tweaked 2014 Toyota Tundra

Toyota debuted its 2014 Toyota Tundra first thing this morning at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show. As a Tundra chief engineer stated in an interview, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," and that's pretty much what they've done with this truck. Toyota kept what worked in the last truck and improved everywhere else. Styling is new but stays very close to the last model; it's a bit bolder up front, with a wider, taller, and more geometric grille, and there are more character lines in the skin. They also stamped "TUNDRA" into the tailgate.

There are now four trim options, each with its own grille styling and interior package. The stripped-down SR work truck is the most basic. The SR5 will be the high-volume seller that gets improved materials and styling. The Limited gets nicer leathers and a raft of tech upgrades including cross traffic alert and blind spot monitoring. The Platinum comes with black leather-trimmed seats, a 12-speaker JBL audio system, and features such as Blind Spot Monitor. And the top-of-the-line 1794 model is leather- and wood-trimmed to the nines in the fashion of a Texas saddlery. The new interiors are probably the most important upgrade, as the inside was the weaksest component of the last version of the Tundra. The fit and finish and material quality are significantly improved and now play in the same ballpark as the segment leaders at Dodge and Ford.

The guts of the truck don't change much. The engines and drivetrains are tweaked for efficiency, but the same V-6 and two V-8s fill out the lineup. The chassis will still come in one length only, though it has been tweaked for better rigidity. Toyota claims a 2000-lb payload capacity and 10,000-lb trailering limit. The most noteworthy change other than the styling is at the rear bumper. It's a three-piece design now so any damage can be repaired more affordably, and the trailer plug moves out from under the truck?it's now next to the license plate. Pricing, power figures, and availability have not been announced.
