Modbook Pro to launch with SSD storage, up for preorder October 3rd

It wasn't all that long ago that Modbook Inc's CEO, Andreas Haas, made the mac-in-tablet Modbook Pro official, now we're learning that the super-slate will launch with high performance SSD storage. So, as you wield your MacBook Pro come tablet, you'll be free from spinning disks. Great, but what impact will this have on capacity? Well, according to the firm, storage will start at 64GB as standard, with upgrades possible all the way up to a, not-unreasonable, 480GB. Pre-orders go live on October 3rd, along with the all important reveal on price. Regardless of cost, if that void between the iPad and full-fat Windows 8 slates had been irking you, here's your answer.

What I've Learned So Far, Part 1

What I\'ve Learned So Far, Part 1

In the past few months, what I?ve learned so far about myself through online marketing is the possibilities are endless. The affiliate, article, and internet businesses are all huge potential income avenues that are filled with additional revenue streams that I have yet to uncover.

My learning curve is steep but not impossible to conquer.

This journey is never boring and is always challenging. I think my blood would stop coursing through its veins, if I didn?t challenge myself to seek out new mountains to conquer. It?s been one heck of a roller coaster ride, to say the least!

The Party?s Not Over Yet

I?ve just begun to tap into the never ending potential of these three income streams and I don?t intend on stopping until I?ve mastered them. That?s my tentative plan, anyway.

The internet has leveled the playing field for everyday people like myself to earn a living online.

I don?t want to give the impression that this ride is completely free of cost. If you find ANYONE offering to teach you how to start a business with no money down, run in the opposite direction as fast as you can!

The saying, ?It takes money to make money?, is so true.

I?ve had to make small investments in time and money I hope will reap benefits in the long run. I don't regret it, though. Compared to the cost of attending a college or university for one semester, what I?ve invested so far is miniscule.

Which is a good thing because I?ve learned I?m not cut out to work for someone else year in and year out.

Unlike my Dad, who was employed for almost 30 years for the same company, the thought of doing that breaks me out in hives.

One painful experience I?ve learned is to always backup the content of my site. A week ago, I accidentally deleted it and the few articles and videos I posted are gone (Ay, Chihuahua!). I could just kick myself for not backing up my site.

But lesson learned. As soon as I complete a project I?m working on, I?ll continue rebuilding it better than ever.

On Writing

It's something I?ve always enjoyed. Although, I never thought I could write full time and I never imagined there was any possibility of making money doing something I enjoy.

Many types of genres, topics, and tools to get my writing juices flowing interest me.

But keeping a journal has been one of the primary ways I?ve used to record the events of my life and it really sparked my renewed interest in composition in the past couple of years.

It never felt like a chore because I was pouring my heart onto paper. In good times or in bad, keeping a journal is therapeutic for me and helps me to process my feelings and emotions.

What I?ve learned from expressing myself in a diary is I have a little skill that?s slowly developing in positive ways. This skill has been transferred to other content creation sites that like my body of work enough to publish it. And yes, I?m pleasantly surprised by that discovery!

Don?t misunderstand me.

I?m not trying to pass myself off as the next Maya Angelou or Toni Morrison. Nor do I even consider myself a writer, much less a published author, it?s just what I like to do.

With practice, written communication is something I would love to continue to explore.

I hope you enjoyed reading part 1 of ?What I?ve Learned So Far?. Leave your comments below and tell me what you think about it.

Iraqi convicts riot, escape from prison; 12 killed

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Prisoners seized weapons and set off hours-long clashes with security guards at a prison in Saddam Hussein's hometown that left 12 dead, including 10 guards, before dozens of inmates managed to escape from the facility, Iraqi officials said Friday.

Many of those who escaped from the prison in Tikrit, 130 kilometers (80 miles) north of Baghdad, were al-Qaida suspects, said a provincial spokesman but he could not say whether the terror group was behind the prison break.

The violence erupted on Thursday night, said Mohammed al-Assi, the spokesman for Salahuddin province where Tikrit is located. Several inmates broke into the prison storeroom and grabbed weapons kept there, overpowering the guards, he said.

The prisoners then engaged in an hours-long gun battle with the security troops inside the facility before breaking out of the prison on Friday morning. Security troops later regained control of the prison, al-Assi said.

Following the prison break, a curfew was imposed in Tikrit, he added.

"Everything is under control now. Our security forces are chasing the escaped prisoners and have already recaptured some," al-Assi told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

A provincial health official, Raed Ibrahim, confirmed that 12 people died in the violence ? 10 prison guards and two inmates. He said 32 people were wounded in the clashes.

Qutaiba al-Jubouri, a lawmaker from the province, said a total of 81 inmates, including some who had been sentenced to death, managed to escape but that 36 of them were quickly recaptured.

"This is a regrettable security breach," said al-Jubouri, adding that an investigation will follow, "starting with the commanders of the security forces" at the prison.

He added that special forces were sent to Tikrit from Baghdad in order to put down the rioting.

Another lawmaker, Hakim al-Zamili, said the inmates burned all the prison records, which will complicate efforts to track down those who escaped.

Prison breaks are common in Iraq and are a big embarrassment to the country's Shiite-led government.

NBC's Ali Arouzi answers reader questions from Iran - World News

While Iran?s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu traded verbal jabs at the United Nations General Assembly this week over the threat of Iran?s nuclear capability, one thing is for sure: international economic sanctions against Iran are having an impact.?

The United States, European Union and the U.N. have imposed tough economic sanctions against Iran, blocking access to the international banking system and curbing sales of Iranian crude oil as a way to persuade Tehran to abandon its nuclear program.

As Ali Arouzi, NBC News Tehran Correspondent, reports today, the sanctions have had a real impact on Iranians as the value of their currency, the rial, continues to drop daily ? affecting everything from basic food items to manufacturing.

Iranian: 'Our money is becoming more and more worthless every day'

Ali answered reader questions about the impact of the sanctions in Iran earlier today.

Thai sailors go "Gangnam Style" on YouTube video

BANGKOK (AP) ? The "Gangnam Style" craze has reached Thailand's navy, which is among the latest to mimic the globally popular dance video.

In a video posted to YouTube, a few dozen smiling sailors from the Third Naval Area Command perform the rodeo-style dance and other hip-shaking moves at their base on the popular tourist island of Phuket.

Lt. Cmdr. Patiroop Khemtis said Friday officers took three days to film and edit the video, instructing participants to mimic the moves in the original video by South Korean singer PSY. It was shown at the base's annual party Wednesday and posted to YouTube the next day.

The video shows white-uniformed sailors in sunglasses galloping through their offices and officers in scuba gear shimmying up the beach.

The original "Gangnam Style" video had close to 300 million YouTube views as of Friday.

Dana White at Jones' defence once again ? Boxing News | bettor.com

Dana White at Jones? defence once again ? UFC News

Finally, it seems like the feud between president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship Dana White and light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has been settled. After watching Jones put up everything at stake against Vitor Belfort at UFC 152, White believes Jones should be credited for his accomplishments.

?There's no doubt that this was Jones' best performance. He looked phenomenal tonight,? said White during the post-fight press conference.

Jones faced the toughest fight of his life against Belfort. He was locked in an armbar submission right in the first round by the Brazilian fighter yet Jones did not give up. During the press conference, Jones admitted that he felt his arm was about to break but he was not ready to give up. He claimed that he would have carried on even if he had to fight with one arm.

When asked about the injury, Jones said that after the submission hold, he felt like his arm was not in the right condition yet he used it to hit Belfort because he is trained to do so.

White and Jones had their bitter moments following UFC 151?s declination recently. However, White believes everyone makes mistakes in their young age and so did Jones. White is ready to forgive the champion for his wrongdoings.

?At the end of the day, has he made a few mistakes? Of course he has. He's not a bad guy. He's not a bad kid at all. He and I sat down yesterday, we had a great conversation...Everything is awesome.?

?There can be no more naysaying about Jon Jones. Listen, you love him or you hate him. If you don't like him, whatever, if you like him, good, but you can't deny that the kid is extremely talented and one of the best in the world...I disagree, and I think that Jon Jones did look unbeatable tonight.?

As of now, White is once again impressed by the American champion, believing that it is about time for naysayers to start respecting Jones. White also highlighted the fact that Jones was highly criticised for not being able to take punches, but now he did and he has proved himself as a top-notch fighter.

Rental Rights for Families with Kids | Bost Real Estate Blog - Real ...

If you?re interested in renting Boston condos or luxurious apartments, it?s important that you know your rights as a renter?especially if you have children. For example, under Massachusetts Lead Paint Law, if a child under 6 moves into a rental property the owner is responsible for making sure they check for lead and for de-leading if lead is present. Boston rental owners cannot refuse to rent to families with children to avoid disclosing information on the presence of lead paint. Additionally, rental owners cannot refuse to renew a pregnant woman?s lease or a family with young children?s lease because a unit may contain lead.

It seems that there is some conflicting information regarding rental owners that reside in one unit of their two-family homes. According to Chapter 151B, the state anti-discrimination law states that owner-occupied two-family homes are exempt from being held accountable for discriminating against children. Yet, there isn?t an exemption like this in regards to the lead paint law. So it seems that if a child is born while a family rents an owner-occupied 2-family, it has to be de-leaded.

If your family is currently looking for the right Boston rental, contact First Boston Realty International to discuss your housing needs. As a seasoned Boston real estate agency, First Boston Realty International will assist you in finding the perfect Boston rental to suit your lifestyle and family.

BBC News Channel conducts first live video interview over smartphone, goes where satellites can't video

We usually associate smartphones in news reporting with citizen journalism, not full-time journalists. However, a confluence of events has just led to the BBC's Nick Garnett becoming a pioneer for mobile broadcasting on the professional level. When a shortage of satellite trucks prevented Garnett from getting the usual video feed for the BBC News Channel, he successfully arranged the British network's first live video interview piped through a smartphone. The key, Garnett says, was Dejero's Live+ iPhone app: while live streaming apps are already commonplace, Dejero's let him merge the 3G and WiFi connections together, getting enough bandwidth to make a TV-worthy broadcast in a country where LTE is still very new. Combined with some very ad hoc staging and help from the BBC's technical teams, the coordination resulted in a surprisingly smooth interview about flooding in northeastern England with relatively few hints of the extra-tiny recording equipment involved. It's unlikely that broadcast crews will reach to their pockets for live coverage solutions before anything else, but the BBC is actively testing Dejero and other apps that could make smartphones as much a part of the field reporting arsenal as a camcorder and an eye for a good story. As we can't embed the clip, check the source link to see it for yourself.

Update: We've now managed to embed the clip after the break.

Minimizing Market Risks With Forex Demo Account | Free Finance ...

Traders, who have spent a long time in Currency exchange, know there is rather a difference between a live account and a demo one. The performance differences a great deal , not just psychologically but practically also. Another outstanding thing is that, you are not the only one to experience this, as it has been quite a simple task to earn income using a demonstration account. Many players blame their loss on dishonest dealers trying to ?influence ? their trades, and often, flactuating market conditions also. However the reality behind every act is your ?BRAIN?. It is not just the success booster but also the culprit behind your loss after you step in live trading. This is very clear, that we are still left with too much to learn, so let?s dig a little deeper?

The unvarnished reality of Currency exchange Demo Trading

Have you ever felt frightened or your heartbeat got quicker when you start your trial account and place your first trading amount? The answer would be ?No ? for most of us, but the first encounter with live-account may have made you sweat due to anxiousness. This is among the most common experiences that traders customarily face, while switching their virtual money to real one. This is thanks to the fact that, they know, they have placed their real money this time. To some point it?s quite standard. Actually if you are basically provided and prepared for the Forex mind battle, then you've got to have learned about the clear danger of losing your funds in the ever changing markets.

However the simple fact behind the strategy is that we frequently take the steps we shouldn't do. Here, I want to draw your attention to new players who started with demo and suffered large losses lately after jumping to real Foreign exchange market. Losses make them realize the difference between virtual and real trading. Where the traders need to focus on trade and performance, they concentrate on cash. When they start to concentrate on trade, they're going to find it improves on its own in quite a fast pace.

While using a practise account, players are not aware of losing money before making the switch to the particular game. After going live, they forget that the money they're using isn't fake. As the market undergoes changes, it makes the traders become mystified and do something against the market. So , if you're actually thinking to join the trading line, stand by and plan strategy to handle the coming worries.

This text has been authored by Andrew Jaw Weng Keong who is a famous person in the domain of Forex trading market and its environment. For full info on Currency exchange, you may visit at www.liteforex.com home. Go here and learn the strategies of foreign exchange trading.

Family Home and Life: Fun With a Magnet

Here?s a fun activity I found on Pinterest for the kids; or for you :) ?I remember playing with magnets when I was a kid and had a lot of fun with them.?

  • Start with chenille stems, or pipe cleaners (depending on what generation you are from)?
  • A clear plastic lidded jar (a smooth surface works best here)
  • A magnet?
  • Scissors or other cutting tool for the chenille stems.

All you need to do is simple cut the chenille stems into desired lengths, mine are about 1 1/2 inches long, and drop them into the jar.?

Place the lid on and pull the magnet around the outside of the jar to pull the pieces around inside.?
The cut pieces will follow the magnet around and form cool patterns. A word of caution: magnets can?destroy?your computer. Keep the magnets away from it!

Are you from generation 'pipe cleaners'? Or generation 'chenille stems'? I'm?definitely?a 'pipe cleaner' generation!

I have had a lot of content theft lately. If you are reading this post anywhere else but at Family Home and Life then it was used without permission! Copyright? Family Home and Life 2012 All Rights Reserved

National Conference On Citizenship: Civic Health Predicts Resistance To Unemployment

During the day, classrooms at Weller Elementary School in Springfield, Mo., are filled with students, teachers and the usual abundance of youthful energy and enthusiasm. But on Tuesday and Friday nights, a different kind of energy fuels the hopeful ambiance.

On those nights, local pastors, school nurses, small-business owners, PTA volunteers, and retired community members meet to discuss their vision for the Weller neighborhood and solutions to the economic challenges it faces. The group tackles questions like "Why do we have economic challenges in our neighborhood?" and "How do we reduce poverty in order to reach our vision?."

The answer may be "civic health."

The meetings are part of the Neighbor for Neighbor project, coordinated by Missouri State University and the Community Partnership of the Ozarks in an effort to foster what the National Conference on Citizenship (NCoC) calls "civic health."

David Smith, the executive director of the NCoC, describes civic health as a measure of community participation in activities like volunteering and voting and the level of trust and interaction between neighbors. The NCoC believes that the concept could be a key factor in turning the struggling U.S. economy around.

For communities like Weller, where Neighbor for Neighbor has calculated the unemployment rate to be nearly double the national average, improving civic health could be a critical first step towards recovery.

Last week, before convening for the 67th Annual National Conference on Citizenship in Philadelphia, the NCoC released a report to highlight the importance of civic health when considering a community's ability to fight unemployment. The report, entitled "Civic Health and Unemployment II: The Case Builds," is a continuation of research that began in 2011.

The report "identifies two aspects of civic health that matter most in preventing unemployment: the presence of a significant nonprofit sector, defined as the number of nonprofits per capita in each community; and social cohesion, the level at which citizens trust, talk to and help neighbors, and socialize with family and friends," the NCoC said in a press release.

According to the report, civic health can be a major factor in reducing unemployment. The NCoC advises community leaders to do several things based on the results of the study, Smith said.

First, leaders and planners must not overlook the impact of civic health on all aspects of community life. Civic health considerations should figure prominently even in economic planning. Second, local governments should encourage and facilitate a welcoming environment for certain types of NPOs that the study found predict resistance to unemployment. Finally, local leaders should include in any civic plan public halls, community auditoriums, arenas, parks, gyms, promenades and other spaces where citizens can congregate and interact.

The investment made in such initiatives will earn significant financial returns for the community, in addition to producing a more connected populace, Smith said. "The more connected people are, the more likely they are to invest in one another. It's a virtuous cycle we're encouraging ? that leads to greater employment and financial capital within the community."

Smith hopes the information will also help guide individual behavior and assist unemployed Americans in the job search. Though Smith understands that there are many factors that can contribute to a person being unemployed, community engagement may provide crucial support, he said.

"When people become unemployed, they pull back from the community," Smith said. "What our findings are saying is: don't pull back. Now is the time to become more engaged in your church, your mosque, or your synagogue, or a social club, Rotary club, or Elks club? By engaging with [community members], they are more likely to be able to help you get employed, or provide opportunities to build skills that make you more employable."

An engaged community and strong civic health are likely part of why Springfield as a whole has been able to weather the recession so well despite struggles in neighborhoods like Weller, according to Dr. Michael Stout. A sociology professor at Missouri State University, Stout is also a coordinator of the Ozarks Regional Social Capital Study (ORSCS), and a co-coordinator of the Neighbor for Neighbor program. Programs like Neighbor for Neighbor are designed to provide a boost in civic health to pockets that aren't keeping up with the rest of Springfield.

Though the national unemployment rate is stubbornly holding over 8 percent, Springfield brought its local rate down to 6.2 percent in June 2012 from 9.5 percent in June 2009.

"The NCoC study reinforces what we've been finding on the ground," Stout said. "We've actively been targeting our resources towards programming that develops social capital. We're concerned with how connected people are to each other."

Stout believes that it's important to have the ideas come from community residents. Local government should respond to the needs of the community and help facilitate their efforts, he said. "What we're really trying to show is that you need to have the connections and collaboration at both the leadership level and the community level for resources and tools," Stout said. "Empower people at the grassroots to be positive agents of change, while ensuring there is a base of support from leadership."

Local schools and businesses are already seeing results. Janet Dankert, one of the coordinators of Neighbor for Neighbor, said the Weller Elementary principal told her that the school has seen "new folks volunteer at the school who were involved in Neighbor for Neighbor, who had never been active with the school before."

In one Neighbor for Neighbor "action team," community members brokered consumer discounts with local vendors. A local landscaping company agreed to give discounts if residents found enough people in the neighborhood to commit their business to the vendor.

Springfield resident Leah Dingman King, who runs her own business coordinating 10-car haulers, helped organize the Neighbor for Neighbor locations for the city. King believes that the plan has a lot of potential but will need a concentrated effort to make a lasting change.

"It's an everyday thing. It's something where if you don't take a step forward everyday, you will go backwards," King says. "The TV and the internet have put a lot of people in their homes, and they're afraid to come out. But we've got a lot of good things happening and the neighbors are slowly coming off of their porches."

New York City Public Schools Go to Plan B

The New York City Department of Education has been stocking nurses? offices at 13 public high schools with Plan B, a ?morning after? hormonal birth-control pill. The medication will be available free of charge to students as young as 14. No parental notification will be required for a girl to seek and be supplied with the emergency contraceptive.

New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn summarized the reasoning behind the plan to CBS New York:

High school students are very sexually active and getting pregnant; so we don't have that luxury to think that they are too young to be engaged in conversations about contraception and sexual education.

Some New York City public schools already supply condoms free of charge to students. Plan B has been dispensed since early last year, but the program was not widely known until the New York Post reported on it this past weekend.

The Department of Education, taking into account that family planning attitudes are different for every family, says it has notified parents from the start that they may opt out of the contraceptive dispensing program, which is saddled with the acronym CATCH?for Connecting Adolescents to Comprehensive Health.

MORE: Plan B: Morning After Pills Sold in Campus Vending Machines

So far, only 1 to 2 percent of heads of family have chosen to withdraw their children from Plan B eligibility.

According to New York City figures, more than 7,000 girls under 17 become pregnant in the city every year, and at least half those pregnancies are terminated. These figures may be central to why so few families are opting out of the program.

Concerned parents may realize that if their daughters are required to reveal details of their sex lives to Mom and Dad, starting with the admission that the girls have a sex life, they will be less likely to seek treatment that can prevent them from being counted among those pregnancy and abortion statistics.

?I think that it is correct to not have parental notification,? said City Council Speaker Quinn. ?[Requiring parental notification] will end up in reality rendering the resource useless for many of the girls who need it most.?

Though directly affected families are overwhelmingly acceptant of the CATCH plan, vocal opposition does exist, at least on talk radio.

?Should the high school or the city pay for it? Are we responsible for that? I don?t think so,? said one New York woman to radio host Glenn Schuck.

?I just don?t agree with the morning-after pill for a child who really isn?t aware of what they?re getting themselves into at this point,? said another radio listener.

An over-the-counter medication dispensed without a prescription, Plan B has been available in the U.S. market since 1999. The pills prevent conception, unlike RU-486, which it is often confused with. RU-486?the so-called abortion pill?contains a synthetic steroid called mifepristone that interferes with the body?s ability to sustain pregnancy. Plan B inhibits or delays ovulation so there is no fertilized egg to dislodge.

Should schoolchildren be granted the option of seeking contraception free of parental oversight? Leave your rationale and reasons in COMMENTS.

More Oil Jobs in Texas

is a member of The Motley Fool Blog Network -- entries represent the personal opinions of our bloggers and are not formally edited.

At first I thought it was too good to be true, but visiting San Antonio on my last trip opened my eyes to the boom South Texas is experiencing.? Back in 2006 when I was about to purchase my rental property in the north side of San Antonio to escape the west coast sub-prime crisis, I had one main goal in my mind - asset preservation and secondary, to bring in a positive monthly cash flow if possible.? After witnessing the transformation of San Antonio in the last two years with manufacturing job growth, falling unemployment rates, and a surging rental market, my ultimate goal has shifted to a possible sale within three to four years.? The seventh most populous city of U.S. is now benefiting from the state's bread and butter - oil.

With hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling, crude reserves are yielding at record levels.? But the new technology has not moved me as much as the recently discovered Eagle Ford Shale reserves, which is a rock formation underlying much of East and South Texas nearly 400 miles.? This area rich in oil deposits and natural gas fields is 50 miles wide and has an average thickness of 250 ft. with a depth of between 4000 and 12000 feet.? It contains high amounts of carbonate, which makes the area brittle and easier to use hydraulic fracturing to obtain oil and natural gas.? These reserves are estimated to be in the range of 3 billion barrels with a potential output of over 400,000 barrels per day.? This means one thing - jobs! How many you ask? Currently estimated over 60,000 if the following mega oil companies keep this pace of expansion.?

Halliburton (NYSE: HAL) was one of the first companies that opened its wallet in building a small operations base of $50 million in the heart of San Antonio.? It hired 1,500 workers for its operations center with average salaries of $70,000 a year.? Its competitor Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB) did not waste a minute and opened its doors to San Antonio with a $20 million compound with over 500 workers with salary ranges of $25,000 up to $85,000 a year.? And we cannot leave out the mega driller Baker Hughes (NYSE: BHI), which has been on a massive drilling spree with countless rigs that have already sprung up all across the shale.?

In the chart below you can see the number of rigs for crude oil (blue circles) and natural gas (red circles) Baker Hughes has established all along the 400 mile stretch landscape.

The job growth and low unemployment was also reiterated by my new tenant as we were having a couple of cold ones at a local bar while going over the lease terms.? My tenant works for Weatherford (NYSE: WFT), a mid-size equipment company that is paying for all of his relocation costs and is providing Baker Hughes and Halliburton with the tools they need to drill away.? The $10 billion market cap. company has been struggling with a large debt load and missed earnings in the last few quarters, but has finally broke its strong resistance of $13 in the last month.? Since February of 2011 it has lost nearly half of its value, but has recently saw increased interest from hedge fund manager Daniel Loeb of Third Point.? The company could see increased revenue benefiting and piggybacking from the major aforementioned drillers that are already in fierce competition.

Study finds germ-killing power in the eyes

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? When it comes to germ-busting power, the eyes have it, according to a discovery by UC Berkeley researchers that could lead to new, inexpensive antimicrobial drugs.

Proteins in the eye can help keep pathogens at bay, finds a new UC Berkeley study.

A team of UC Berkeley vision scientists has found that small fragments of keratin protein in the eye play a key role in warding off pathogens. The researchers also put synthetic versions of these keratin fragments to the test against an array of nasty pathogens. These synthetic molecules effectively zapped bacteria that can lead to flesh-eating disease and strep throat (Streptococcus pyogenes), diarrhea (Escherichia coli), staph infections (Staphylococcus aureus) and cystic fibrosis lung infections (Pseudomonas aeruginosa).

The findings, to be published in the October issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, could lead to a powerful new weapon in the battle against disease-causing invaders. These keratin fragments are relatively easy to manufacture, making them good candidates for low-cost therapeutics, the study authors said.

"What's really exciting is that the keratins in our study are already in the body, so we know that they are not toxic, and that they are biocompatible," said the study's principal investigator, Suzanne Fleiszig, a professor at UC Berkeley's School of Optometry who specializes in infectious diseases and microbiology. "The problem with small, naturally occurring, antimicrobial molecules identified in previous research is that they were either toxic or easily inactivated by concentrations of salt that are normally found in our bodies."

These new small proteins in the study were derived from cytokeratin 6A, one of the filament proteins that connect to form a mesh throughout the cytoplasm of epithelial cells.

"We used to think that cytokeratins were primarily structural proteins, but our study shows that these fragments of keratin also have microbe-fighting capabilities," said study lead author Connie Tam, an assistant research scientist in Fleiszig's lab. "Cytokeratin 6A can be found in the epithelial cells of the human cornea as well as in skin, hair and nails. These are all areas of the body that are constantly exposed to microbes, so it makes sense that they would be part of the body's defense."

In a commentary published alongside the study, Michael Zasloff, professor of surgery and pediatrics at Georgetown University's School of Medicine, said these "keratin-derived antimicrobial peptides appear to be exciting new biocompatible candidates for development as human anti-infective therapeutics."

The researchers in Fleiszig's lab came upon cytokeratin 6A in their efforts to solve the mystery behind the eye's remarkable resilience to infection. They noticed that the surface of the eye, unlike other surfaces of the body, did not have bacteria living on it, and that corneal tissue could handily wipe out a barrage of pathogens in lab culture experiments.

"It is very difficult to infect the cornea of a healthy eye," said Fleiszig. "We've even used tissue paper to damage the eye's surface cells and then plastered them with bacteria, and still had trouble getting bacteria to enter the cornea. So we proposed that maybe there were antimicrobial factors that are unique to the eye."

In the hunt for this mystery compound, the researchers cultured human corneal epithelial cells and exposed them to the P. aeruginosa bacteria. They used mass spectrometry to sort out which peptides were most active in fighting off the bacteria. Cytokeratin 6A-derived peptides emerged the winners, and surprisingly, peptide fragments as short as 10 amino acids were effective.

To confirm that they got the right protein, the researchers used gene-silencing techniques to reduce the expression of cytokeratin 6A in the cornea of mice. With a key defense disabled, the amount of bacteria that adhered to the corneas increased fivefold.

Tests showed that cytokeratin 6A-derived fragments could quickly kill bacteria in water and in a saline solution, showing that the salt contained in human tears would not dilute the protein's effectiveness. Other experiments indicated that cytokeratin 6A fragments prevented the bacteria from attacking epithelial cells, and that the proteins cause bacterial membranes to leak, killing the pathogen within minutes.

The researchers noted that further research could reveal numerous different keratin fragments in the body's innate defense system.

"Keratins may represent a novel class of antimicrobials with the potential to be designed to selectively kill specific pathogens," said Tam.

Other study co-authors from UC Berkeley's School of Optometry are James Mun, a former UC Berkeley Ph.D. student, and David Evans, a UC Berkeley associate research scientist and a professor of biological and pharmaceutical sciences at Touro University California in Vallejo.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the National Institutes of Health provided support for this research.

Naked mole-rats may hold clues to pain relief

Monday, September 24, 2012

Naked mole-rats evolved to thrive in an acidic environment that other mammals, including humans, would find intolerable. Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago report new findings as to how these rodents have adapted to this environment.

The study was published online this week on PLOS ONE.

In the tightly crowded burrows of the African naked mole-rats' world, carbon dioxide builds up to levels that would be toxic for other mammals, and the air becomes highly acidic. These animals freely tolerate these unpleasant conditions, says Thomas Park, professor of biological sciences at UIC and principal investigator of the study -- which may offer clues to relieving pain in other animals and humans.

Much of the lingering pain of an injury, for example, is caused by acidification of the injured tissue, Park said.

"Acidification is an unavoidable side-effect of injury," he said. "Studying an animal that feels no pain from an acidified environment should lead to new ways of alleviating pain in humans."

In the nose of a mammal, specialized nerve fibers are activated by acidic fumes, stimulating the trigeminal nucleus, a collection of nerves in the brainstem, which in turn elicits physiological and behavioral responses that protect the animal -- it will secrete mucus and rub its nose, for example, and withdraw or avoid the acidic fumes.

The researchers placed naked mole-rats in a system of cages in which some areas contained air with acidic fumes. The animals were allowed to roam freely, and the time they spent in each area was tracked. Their behavior was compared to laboratory rats, mice, and a closely related mole-rat species that likes to live in comfy conditions, as experimental controls.

The naked mole-rats spent as much time exposing themselves to acidic fumes as they spent in fume-free areas, Park said. Each control species avoided the fumes.

The researchers were able to quantify the physiologic response to exposure to acidic fumes by measuring a protein, c-Fos, an indirect marker of nerve activity that is often expressed when nerve cells fire. In naked mole-rats, no such activity was found in the trigeminal nucleus when stimulated. In rats and mice, however, the trigeminal nucleus was highly activated.

The naked mole-rats' tolerance of acidic fumes is consistent with their adaptation to living underground in chronically acidic conditions, Park said.

19 hrs.

It was possible?to walk into a store Saturday and buy an iPhone 5. But it took some hunting.

Some stores reported having Apple's newest phone available for walk-up customers. But a random check of about a dozen stores indicated that most were sold out.

A Verizon store in New York City said the phone was available. A Sprint store in a suburb of St. Paul, Minn., said all but the most expensive 64 gigabyte iPhone 5s were sold out.

The iPhone 5 went on sale Friday, igniting explosive interest around the world. Apple's website said phones bought online would ship in three to four weeks. Verizon's website said they would ship by Oct. 19.

Sprint said late Friday that its inventory of the iPhone 5 was "seriously constrained" or sold out in its retail stores.

It's hardly uncommon for supply shortages to make it difficult to get new iPhones in the first days of their release. For Apple, the iPhone introduction is the biggest revenue driver of the year. Analysts say the company will likely sell millions of phones in the first few days.

There were long lines Friday at Apple's stores in Asia, Europe and North America as customers pursued the new smartphone. Apple and the phone companies haven't provided sales figures from the first day. Apple is expected to announce early results Monday.

Last year, Apple said on the Monday after the launch of the iPhone 4S that it had sold 4 million in the first three days.?

Tide shifting toward Obama in battleground states

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? In a presidential race seemingly frozen in place for months, the advantage has shifted toward President Barack Obama.

That change follows a series of miscues by Mitt Romney, punctuated by the Republican challenger's comments about people who pay no income tax.

Despite a continuing gray economic sky and unrest in the Mideast, the president has edged ahead of Romney in some of the most competitive states, including Iowa and Virginia, and forced Romney to redouble efforts in Florida and Ohio ? which he probably must win if he wants to be president.

With about six weeks left before Election Day and early voting under way in some states, Romney faces a problematic map, a ticking clock and a campaign demeanor that has failed to click with many voters.

Man mauled after jumping into tiger pit at New York's Bronx Zoo

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A Siberian tiger critically injured a man who jumped into the big cat's den at New York's Bronx Zoo on Friday, retreating only after emergency workers scared it off with a fire extinguisher.

The man, 25, was riding the zoo's elevated monorail in the afternoon and leapt from a car, clearing a fence around the tiger enclosure, according to a statement from the zoo.

He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. His condition was later upgraded to stable, a spokeswoman for the Jacobi Medical Center said.

Zoo and fire officials said the man received bites or puncture wounds on his arms, legs and shoulder during the roughly 10 minutes he was alone with the tiger.

"One leg was severely injured," said Frank Dwyer, a fire department spokesman, although he could not confirm early reports the man lost a foot in the incident.

In rescuing the man, the zoo's emergency workers used a fire extinguisher to repel the tiger, then ordered the man to roll under an electrified perimeter wire to safety. The staff had been prepared to use deadly force if necessary, zoo director Jim Breheny told a televised news conference.

"If not for the quick response by our staff and their ability to perform well in emergency situations, the outcome would have been very different," the zoo said.

The tiger involved is an 11-year-old, 400-pound (180-kg) male named Bachuta, Breheny said. The director said the zoo would review the incident but would not put the tiger down or take it out of the exhibit.

Breheny said the incident was "just an extraordinary event that happened because somebody was trying to endanger themselves."

"The tiger did nothing wrong in this case at all," he said.

In July, tigers at a zoo in Copenhagen killed a man who scaled a fence and crossed a moat to get into their den, and wolves at Sweden's largest zoo killed a zookeeper in their enclosure in June.

White Chocolate Brownies & A Giveaway - The Nifty Foodie

White Chocolate Brownies

I love living in the South. Sure, the heat index is enough to make you want to just sit in an ice bath all day, but the food?! Oh, the food MORE than makes up for it.

Around here?.

?your cooking is judged based on how good your gumbo is
?we embrace stale bread for bread pudding
?we have a love (the drink)/hate (the storm) relationship with hurricanes
?we don?t mind getting our hands dirty to dig out tiny pieces of seafood over newspaper
?a biggie?you know the difference between creole and cajun food

I know a lot of people frown upon Louisiana since there are some stigmas about living here, but I really am blessed to say that this is my home. I just love the little things that make Louisiana home, and even if I don?t live here the rest of my life, I know that Louisiana will always be a part of me. Cheesy, but seriously true.

When I was contacted about reviewing a cookbook called ?The Southern Foodie?, I just couldn?t resist. The book, written by food/drink/travel writer Chris Chamberlain, features recipes from favorite restaurants in the South and it?s organized by state. Of course, when I got the cookbook, I frantically flipped through the pages and bookmarked numerous recipes.

I was very happy to see Louisiana well-represented in the book, too. There are some great staples in there, like red beans and rice, pralines and bread pudding, to name a few. Besides the classics, I found that there are some fun, out of the box recipes, like barbequed oysters and sweet potato-andouille soup. This book is great for someone trying to get a feel for Southern food, and even for Southerners, it?s impressive how many different recipes the author has in here that I?ve never heard of.

One of the hardest things for me when I find a good cookbook is to choose a first recipe. I actually have quite a few that I want to try, but I was really in the mood to bake, so I decided to make these white chocolate brownies. I love that brownies bake up so quickly and you don?t have to fork out the mixer to make them. It?s sort of dangerous how easy brownies are to throw together and these were no exception. :-) This brownie is a white chocolate brownie base with white and bittersweet chocolate mixed in. Often times, I find white chocolate desserts to be a little too sweet, but I really think the bittersweet chocolate helped to balance things out a good bit. I ended up halving the recipe, since the original recipe makes two 13?9 inch pans worth of brownies (the halved recipe is below). I sent these to work with my husband, and found out that some people enjoyed 2-3 brownies on their own, so this recipe is definitely a winner. Based on this recipe, I can?t wait to give some others a try!

Now, you know I wouldn?t just dangle this cookbook in front of y?all without having a giveaway. :-) The publisher sent me extra books to giveaway to two lucky readers!

Cookbook Giveaway

To enter, just let me know What?s your favorite Southern dish or what Southern dish have you always wanted to try?

For an extra entry, tweet ?I entered to win a copy of ?The Southern Foodie? from @niftyfoodie. Enter here: http://bit.ly/Um2ByC? (and also leave an additional comment letting me know that you tweeted).

You have until Friday, October 5th at 11:59pm to comment.

Just a note: Only continental US readers can enter this giveaway.

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 sticks of unsalted butter, cut into 4 tbsp. pieces
  • 6 oz. finely chopped white chocolate
  • 3 large eggs
  • pinch of salt
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 oz. coarsely chopped white chocolate
  • 4 oz. coarsely chopped bittersweet chocolate

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and grease a 13?9 inch baking pan.
  2. In a saucepan, melt the butter on low heat. Once the butter is melted, add the finely chopped white chocolate and stir until the chocolate is melted. Remove the pan from heat, and allow it to cool.
  3. While the chocolate is cooling, add the eggs and salt to a large bowl and whisk well, until the eggs are light and frothy. Slowly add the sugar and butter/chocolate mixture while mixing, and then add the vanilla extract and flour. Mix the batter until everything is smooth and well-combined. Add the coarsely chopped white and bittersweet chocolate and mix them in well.
